I have an older computer so my browser tends to run slow. The thing that drives me crazy is that it can hang for a long time while it's loading ads. I've tried Ad Blocker Plus, but that stops working after a few months when the sites find ways to get around the Ad Blocker detection. Is there a better solution that I haven't been trying?

There's a big chance that the cause of your browser running slow is actually because your internet connection is pretty bad. I'm having this problem as well, even though my laptop is only a year old. I've found that changing my preferenced DNS server to 8.8.8.8 has slightly increased speed. You can do this by right clicking on your connection, then choosing status. There you go to properties and then to the Internet Protocol version 4 properties (it might be worded a bit differently, my OS language isn't English). Moving you computer closer to your router or using a wired instead of a wireless connection will help with this as well.

If you think that it is in fact your slow computer that causes the problems you should uninstall as many toolbars, extensions, add-ons, etc. as possible. Also, if you don't tend to have many tabs open at the same time you should use Chrome as browser, otherwise Firefox is better.

I don't know which browser you use but fact is blocking ads themselves won't speed up your browser because the scripts most sites use to add functionality to their sites will still make your browser load up slowly. And then there's the tracking code. . .most web-sites use that also significantly make web-pages load slower [like Google Analytics].

My advice to you would be to download an old version of Firefox [3.5 to 3.6 versions are great]. Install two add-ons.

1. Noscript add-on. This will block javascript/flash/silverlight, etc on every site you visit so, no ad will be displayed ever.

2. Faster-fox. I don't know how it works but I hear it tweaks up your network settings [boasting up you speeds by X3].

Try that out and you'll enjoy browsing the net. Also, unless it's important you view images, disable loading of images in your browser's settings because [it takes a bit of time for the browser to retrieve images stored in third-party websites.

I'll give your advice a try and see if that helps, Denis. The thing that seems to be the biggest problem is when I'm loading a "https" webpage, like Facebook. It can sit there for a minute trying to load. But, if I go to a different site that isn't "https", even if it's got a lot of media on it, it loads fairly quickly. I'm using Chrome, and I've made sure all my java and flash is current. I don't know what's going on really. Maybe Firefox 3.6 will be a better option.
