You SHOULD have put all the cards on the table when she moved in. Now you've established a pattern of behavior and, to be honest, you're fucked.

Get used to being used if you don't put your foot down now. The easiest simplest way is to just state your position and if they don't like it let them move on to the next sucker.

I'm trying to understand why your friend lived with you for a year without paying rent, without you establishing any ground rules per payments on their end, and now you expect to address the issue.

The issue should of been addressed when your friend moved in with timetables established.

Best answer.. :thumbup

To add to Tasha's you should always establish a contract before even letting someone start a process.

I guess you can just ask now but if they refuse, you are out of luck.

If you went 1 year without talking about rent and living together there has to be much more to the story...

Simple. If your friends don't want to help you with the rent, don't let them move in. The rules with any rental property is that if you don't pay, you don't stay.

Allowing them to stay with you rent free for a year was a strange thing to do. I need more context than this. Is this person employed? What is their financial situation? I feel like there's something you're not telling us here as to why you would wait a year to consider asking them for rent.

Edit: Oh hey, it's a decade old thread.

…I would never ask a friend../..anyone to return money, really because if someone needs to be helped with money in any way, then they’re probably not going to be in a position to pay back without continuing to struggle…I only ever ‘loan’ what I can afford to give and that’s how I think of it, that it’s given and gone…so no negative feelings creep in of any expectations of it being returned etc…
