the derivative approximates the slope of a curve at a specific point. typical formula for a straight line is y=mx+b. the only thing in that question/formula that affects slope is the m. so the answer was 3. it gets a bit more complicated when you start working on curves but the derivative still approximates the slope.

well it's usually taught in first year calculus, how to find the derivative.

I hate math. Too uncreative. Only one way to do it and you have to show exactly how you did it...not my style

Always more than one way to do things . I'll be the first to say I am lacking in the creativity department. But with enough practice, you start to recognize the easiest way to work on math problems.
