Yes, but with what we need technology wise to prove or disprove string theory

How long.. as in how many years, decades, ect are we away from it

Lets say string theory is 100% correct (and it probably isn't), (even though there are some indicators that there is something that makes the strings) How long until we can prove or disprove it?

BTW don’t ask me to explain the indicators… I can’t even begin to grasp the math involved

i dont know if we are that far anymore -
the way I think about it, regardless of whether or not string theory (or any theory) is 'correct' or not, its more about "can it explain things correctly or not". what i mean by that is, for example, with gravity, we have a ball, we drop it and it falls. while we dont fully understand what gravity is, we DO know that the equation we have for it works ( at least on a macroscopic scale.. i dont know enough about the quantum macheanics to know how gravity works on microscopic scales, but its not important to my point). so in the end, as long as the equations we come up with can predict things correctly, they ARE 'correct' as far as i am concerend. when they find an exception to the rule, usually it means that they missed some term in the equation that was negligible at first but in certain cases is more important, but the rule itself is still prety much ok.

so unles they decide that string theory is completely wrong and cant predict anything, i think relatively soon - (meaning, in our lifetimes)

but im obviuoulsy being optimistic

well, everything happens for some reason, because it happens. science is finding out how it happens. people arent perfect. so science isnt perfect. but that doesnt mean we cant improve :dunno

oh youre right, but i was just saying that the qualitative how and the quantitative how are two different things, you know? like, you can have a formula that predicts something exactly, but you may not fully undstand why it works.

I have a theory on everything right now. :)

Go ahead.... Ask me anything. :D

To answer your question really though, it's a long way off. Before you can put forth a theory, you have to be able to observe something, weather through the senses, or the physics. We can't begin to have a theory on "Everything" until we can see everything. My rough gestimate would be 600 years to the end of the galaxy, and 1200 years to the beginning of the (at least this) universe. (Now ask about Multverse, bubble-verse, plexi-verse, etc....) lol

Short answer..... "Long time." :D

The good news is though, they're building the first space port in NM next year!! :banana :banana :banana

update from the future!

with the LHC near completion, we will have a big chance to observe smaller particles. when i hear theory of everything, i think of all the physics we're thinking about right now. we have the electromagnetic-weak force merged, and we've almost got gravity and the strong nuclear force. if funding keeps up, i say 20 years.

There will never be a Theory Of Everything - for some strange reason this is looked on as the holy grail of science, probably started by Einstien who believed it was possible.

As an example, electricity is a fairly well understood principle & yet there are at least a dozen rules to try & explain it - you think that the Universe could be summed up in one little equation - not bloody likely.

i think we can resolve the differences between macro and micro physics, whether that be with general relativity and quantum mechanics or whatever we come up with. i also think we will come up with a way to unify and better explain gravity, electromagnetism, and the weak/strong nuclear forces.

whether we come up with more questions after that, meaning we don't really know the theory of everything, is just a technicality.
