How do I know if my router FW is working?

I bought a router a little while ago because it seemed more efficient than some of the firewall software I tried. But as a skeptic, I can't help but wonder if it's actually working. Unfortunately, I don't know of any way of making sure.

Does anyone know anything about how routers work and/or how to access the firewall in a router to make sure it's protecting the computer?

you will have to install a small java based web client
