My brother is there with U.S. Coast Guard, helping with the rescue and clean up.

They sure need all the help they can get.. Have you heard anything from him, about the situation? The different newsfeeds can't really seem to agree on the extent of the damage.

No, he emailed us saying that he would call when he can. And we were told to limit emails to the ship. I'm not sure if he's even there yet but I'll pass along what information I can when I hear something.

A catastrophic 7.0 Mw earthquake hit Haiti yesterday, and now the extent of the damage is starting to emerge. Various sources report 100,000-500,00 dead.

Thousands feared dead in Haiti quake; many trapped - Yahoo! News

From the stories I've heard, it's very devastating especially since they still had not recovered from 3 severe hurricanes that struck the country 2 years ago. They still had no basic infrastructure in place and what they did, is now destroyed. Various reporters have painte a bleak picture saying imagine the worse conditions you can as far as basic services and then take that away. It sounds like hell on earth.

My best wishes to him. I'm sure they will encounter much human tragedy and hardship.

We got a response back from my brother. They haven't been there too long but all the piers are destroyed so they are unable to get terribly close to shore. So he hasn't been able to see much. They've been refueling helicopters but they're orders change hour by hour. They probably ended up going to get supplies from some of the bases down there.

I see both Rush & Pat Robertson couldn't resist the opportunity to shoot their mouths off.......... Imagine freaking that......

It was a rare one... 7.0's don't happen often out there.... How very sad...

Got another email from my brother. They sent some people from their ship over to the Haitian Coast Guard base to help with the injured. They had well over a thousand people lined up but because of a lack of supplies and people, they only treated about a hundred of them. There were some basic amputations (his words) that they really couldn't help. There was so many broken bones that they ran out of splints. Most of the ship spent last night making splints from pipes, 2x4s, ceiling tiles, basically anything they could get their hands on. My brother's been directing the Coast Guard air traffic and generally keeping track of the radio.
