Holy crap what a difference 2gigs makes opposed to 1gig

To run it comfortably yea. I was running it with 1, but it was very sluggish.
vista runs the directx component *all the time* now... thus the need for a really good onboard graphics card, or a decent dedicated graphics card, because the interface you see, is all managed by directx.
which plays well with microsoft's strategy of selling you something the previous instance of works good, but it is the latest and supposedly greatest, and all that was accomplished was a shittier, and more bloated system that sucks, especially if you are a gamer or programmer, or some other individual requiring some sort of direct access to the hardware or data, and that vista locks you out of unless you yourself pay them all of your children, and their first grandchildren as part of a contract to get you the keys in order to carry out your regular life.
in other words, fuck vista. there is no new shit available for it that actually makes it worth you to pony up the cash for it. $400 for an operating system... fuck that shit.
*the $400 dollar edition (who the fuck makes different editions with less than stellar security issues... oh hello, microsoft) "vista ultimate" is nothing more than an xp professional with an new interface. the underpinnings did not change, except the stupid decision to have most of the drivers run in userland.
now, if you are just getting into the modern world, which is rare these days, vista would work for you. otherwise, keep buying oem copies from the online vendors, because the brick and mortar stores do not sell xp anymore, or at least those in the united states, around the southeast, near where i live.

I'll hope to never go to Vista... if I get a new laptop I'll wipe Vista off and put XP back on.

The whole 2 gigs to RUN IT is what gets me. Thats ridiculous. I used it for a while, and i admit i liked it at first, but then the new wore off and i got to wanting XP back.
My Vista laptop refuses to stay connected to our wireless router. My wife'll be sitting next to me on her XP laptop with everything being fine. I'll fuck with my computer for half an hour and still have nothing. Then, out of nowhere it'll just decide to start working again.
I'm having that problem right now using my wifes XP notebook. I lose wifi connection at least once every 30 mins. Sometimes it will lose connection and connect again immediately. Sometimes I have to fuck around with it.
The 2 gig thing is a pretty much non factor. Memory is dirt cheap anymore so why not have more memory?
here is the deal. you need 512 mb to run basic vista - the ncessary stuff, not the cute graphics and shit.
512 more for applications to run.
the 1024 min spec is that above.
the 2048 accepted minimum spec is for the vista in full "glory/graphics" and then the 1024 for the rest.

the other 512 for vista (the 1024 req'mt) is for the extra graphics memory necessary to maintain the smooth frame rates - from what i have heard, the areo interface is all directx run, not the old gdi/gdi+ library.
