I'm 58, I've had two sigmoidoscopy which are the short versions, but my new Dr convinced me that sigmoids were not enough. In and out on Friday, about 2 hrs for entire process. Colonoscopy was about 30 min. Instead of fully conscious and uncomfortable as with a sigmoid, I had an iv and was sedated, pain and discomfort free... except for prep, drink a gallon of laxative day before and spend 3 or so hours camped on the pot with a good book. ;) What ever sedative they used, it was wonderful. I woke up feeling very comfortable and at ease as compared to the last time I had surgery (in the 70s) nauseous, like I was gonna puke.

As far as results, do you really want to know? ;) If so keep reading.

Mild to severe diverticulosishttp://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/diverticulosis/, several aphthous ulcers (of the colon vs mouth), and no colon polyps. Ulcers were biopsied although I don't think they are associated with cancer like polyps can be. Anyway the Dr did not seem concerned and they will call me in a few days with results.

As far as I know the age were you start getting these exams are 50, earlier if you have any family history.

So....are you ok?

As far as I know. I do have to wait for the biopsy report, but my understanding is that the ulcers I mentioned, similar to canker sores except they are in your colon are not usually associated with cancer. I should have the report soon. Thanks for asking. :)

It's the waiting and the wondering that's the most difficult, isn't it? Please keep us informed, until then you're in my thoughts.

Hope the results are good results, Minor.

What on earth did you eat or drink to cause canker sores in your colon? :eek

I appreciate the thought. :) Honestly I'm not worried as what I've read it's polyps that are the big concern regarding cancer which I don't have. Fingers crossed. :)

No idea. Aphthous ulcers (canker sores) in the mouth are caused by a variety of reason. Diet is not one of them other than if you eat food you might be allergic too. I have no known food allergies. See this link. Keep in mind that nothing I've read associates canker sores with cancer. They biopsied them just to make sure all bases are covered.

I've not been told to change my diet although it was recommended that I take fiber (like Metamucil) which I have been taking for about 10 years now. This helps with diverticulosis, but I have no symptoms. It is a very common condition. The condition that causes problems is diverticulitis which is an inflammation of the diverticula (pockets in the walls of the colon) which can be a serious condition. I don't have that condition. Fingers crossed again. ;)

I had diverticulitis for about 10 years until it perforated in May of 1990. I was damn lucky to have survived and for that I credit the medical staff at the hospital. After a 13 day stay I was released 66 pounds lighter with a colostomy bag.......... which only weighed a few ounces. I lost another 30 pounds within the first month at home and waited another 60 days or so before going in for the re-connect to get rid of the bag. I've been able to keep all but about 24 pounds off. :thumbup

What's the moral of the story Minor Axis..... pay close attention to what the doctors tell you to do.

So there was a little positive with all the negative. ;) So how are you now regarding diverticulosus?

I got my biopsy report back today. All is benign which is good, however I have non-specific ileitis which is an inflammation of some part of the bowels. It is common in people from 20-50 years old. Read about it here. I have no symptoms as described in this article. The doctor has directed me to have a "small bowel" series which involves drinking barium (?) or whatever it is you drink so that it will show up on an xray. Then the Dr will talk more about what I should do to minimize whatever the threat is.

Wow, Guyzerr! That sounded like a painful ordeal. Glad it all worked out for you. :thumbup

Good news on the benign biopsy.

Sure hope the xrays offer you the information you'll need to take care of business.

Glad it worked out ok for ya Minor. As Guyzer said do what the doc tells ya. That diverticulitis can turn into some nasty stuff.

My understanding is that with a colonoscopy back when they did not knock you out that the most of the pain was due to them blowing you up with air to get the scope where they need to get it to. The first time I had one there was really not much if any discomfort. The 2nd one though there still was air in me which they warn about that is like having bad cramps. Fortunately it only lasted a couple hours.

For sure the procedure is a slam dunk except for the prep. That is awful

You are kind of old to get the first one. I always thought they should be done at 50. Then every 5 years if ok. I have had some benign polyps so now they have me on the 3 year cycle.

Ya but it's a hell of a hard way to loose weight.

So how are you now regarding diverticulosus?

I am symptom free but it's amazing what comes to mind on the rare occasion that I get a bit of a belly ache or a gassball. When ever it happens I say to mineself ... damn.. here we go again... and then it passes :D and all is good again.

It's good to hear you don't have any of that nasty " C " word stuff. I was keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Oh... and good luck drinking that barium stuff... it's a real blast. ;) I've had to drink it and I survived but I've also had it in the other end about 4 or 5 days after my surgery. There is a story of horrors that I won't get into so make sure you listen to your doctor so we don't have to sit around a campfire trying to figure out who's experience was the worst. :24:

Thanks for the kind thoughts. :D I got my first sigmoid, back when I was 49 then another at 54. My doctor at the time seemed to think a combination of sigmoid, stool samples, and some other test (I forget) covered it. When we moved to Houston and I got a new Dr and new insurance (btw, love insurance, all should have it ;)) and he told me sigmoids were out. This is why I got the colonoscopy. In hind sight I should have gotten one earlier but fortunately I don't have any of (as Guyzerr calles it) the "C" stuff. I'm getting the small bowel series, but as far as colonoscopies, I'm due in another 5 years. Oh, and no air issues/farting issues which makes me wonder if they still use air? If they do they have a means of removing it from your gut.

Ya but it's a hell of a hard way to loose weight.

Thanks for the well wishes! :) I'm not looking forward to the barium, but it's all for the cause. ;)

I did not have to take barium the last time. I forget what it was. But it was just a massive dose of a standard OTC product. The taste was not bad at all but you had to drink a ton of it. Took longer to work too.

and I am pretty sure they still use air. Just that sometimes it gets all vented while sometimes it don't. I guess it did for you since you are a perfect asshole :D
