I have an essay due tomorrow that I'm having a killer time getting started on, partially because my nasty chemistry teacher moved my exam up with out so much as one class period's notice, but I was wondering if any one could offer a little insight for me, it doesn't matter if you've read the book or not. It's technically a research paper, and my prompt is

In Raymond Chandler’s The Long Goodbye, we have all the necessary components for the thriller. The title The Long Goodbye suggests a prolonged way of ending a relationship. Explain what this phrase could mean and how it could keep the reader’s attention. Your paper should be between 4 and 6 pages.

I have an idea of what I want to do. The guy's wife was dying from a terminal illness when he wrote it and I think he used it in a way to help himself deal with everything. Another thing I noticed is that the main male characters are composed of different selves that he once was. I want to incorporate that by using goodbye to mean he is letting go of his past selves while trying to find closure with his wife's death so that he can move on. And in all actuality, he never really did, but I don't particularly care.

I think what I want to try to do is find as many different view points or meanings of goodbye as I can. What is goodbye to you? Does it signify anything beyond "see ya later"? Things of that nature would be incredibly helpful. Quotes would also help. One that I'm using is "[FONT=&quot]Why does it take a minute to say hello and forever to say goodbye? "

I can post what I have already if that would be useful.
Thanks in advance!!!!
