Help! I have a virus!

My anit-virus software, Sophos, doesn't pick it up.

It basically keeps popping up ads from Internet Explorer. I don't use Internet Explorer. I was thinking maybe I could just uninstall Internet Explorer and fix it for now...

A few people have told me to just reformat, but I don't have a recovery disk.

I do have a key for Windows Vista, but no disc.

I would LOVE Windows 7, but can't afford it now, and I hear it's near impossible to download.


It's annoying and scary - some of these ads have voices. My computer is basically just bombarded with pop-ups....

Janie Francis recommended this online scanner to me and said that it's really good. Click on the link for 7.1 of what you have 32 bit or 64 bit. It will do a one time download of something and when the scanner pops up change the settings to customize the scan. I think it's a blue link that you click on. Run a complete scan not a quick scan. Francis said it can catch practically anything so I'd give that a shot before you try to reformat or anything...

I had those annoying pop ups happen on my last computer. It was horrible. I couldn't do a damn thing. And I couldn't get any programs suggested to fix it to download due to dial up. Ended up giving the computer away and getting this one that I have now in exchange.

I had to have a friend with Satellite internet come over and download antivirus with his card on it though, when the antivirus that was on this computer wanted me to update to a newer version. I tried and again.... dial up..... the stuff just doesn't work when downloading or uploading or whatever.

Malware bytes, but make sure it's fully updated. Press the update button twice to be sure.

Also, try the Kaspersky virus removal tool: http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/virus-removal-tools (at bottom of page, but other scanners there might be useful if they relate)
This one can be run in safe-mode if neccasery

Do a system restore on your computer, works for me every time.
You should try Linux, I've never gotten a virus!
