Hard drives - Test

Hello all.

I have a server at home running 2008 server. but some of the hard drives are making some funny sounds, and i prob going to have to get new ones soon, but was wondering if anyone knows of a tool that you can test them with?

Sorry I should add that most hard drive manufacturers make software for testing the drive. In the old days you would have the software on a Diskette ( yes I am dating myself ) but today you could load it on a USB stick or CD Rom..

It boots from the USB / CD Rom and will do a diagnostic on the drive and tell you if it is about to crash..

It uses the SMART Technology inside the drive..

Usually you can find the software on the Manufacturers Web site..

Seeing there are only really two Rotational Hard Drive Makers left ( Western Digital and Seagate ) you may have to do a bit of research..

Sometimes the drives get warped. In order to equalize the warp drives, you can use powerful magnets against the drives and that should fix the problem.

hd tune is a neat program; i like having speccy around too (from piriform), it might be able to show the SMART status, which will help in diagnostics.
