Noam Chomsky!!! It was awesome!
So it went like this: I got to the lecture room where he was going to speak today at around 3 or so. The place was half full. I got there just in time with with my friend who I was meeting there. Just after I got there the whole room, which holds about 500 people quickly became packed.
Unfortunately, one of my other friends was coming from work, so they couldn't make it quite on time. The police officer let them in the lecture hall at the last minute, but there was still no seats. I felt bad because I only decided to come at the last minute and they had been looking forward to this thing for weeks, so I gave up my seat and went to one of the lecture rooms where the talk was being streamed.
The room I went to was in a science building and held maybe 200 people? It became packed quickly too, so good thing I got over there fast. Unfortunately, the speakers were crap so you had to struggle to listen to everything.
They started with this "we are the 99%" presentation and did chants and such. They had made a prop which was supposed to look like a dragon or something and represent corporate greed. Then Chomsky came out with someone else and gave his speech. He talked about Howard Zinn, OWS, global warning, tuition, the upcoming election etc. Howard Zinn's family was in the audience, it was neat. There was a question and answer session after the presentation.
Just before it ended, I ran back over to the main lecture building and waited for the crowd to release. I was able to wiggle my way in while they were reminding everyone about a local occupy event. Then the crowd sort of dispersed. Some went to get stuff signed by Chomsky and get their picture taken with him. I was able to get a good glimpse of him, only 5 feet away or so. Unfortunately, his people whisked him away to the airport really quick and only a few people got some last minute photos with him. I was thinking about buying one of the books and getting it signed, good thing I didn't.
All in all, it was pretty neat. Had a blast!
