A number of Pacific islands are about to be abandoned because they are shrinking due to rising seas. Venice is also having more frequent flood days.

I had an Astronomy professor put it this way:

If you fill a glass halfway with ice, then fill it to the brim with water, what happens when the ice melts? Does the glass overflow?

That logic would be fine if all the ice on this planet was floating in the ocean but most of it is locked up in glaciers & on continents (land masses), so when it melts it will flow into the sea.

Try the experiment this way, fill a glass with water to the brim & then put some ice into another cup, lay the cup with ice in it, on it's side so that the melting water flows into the first cup. Now it will overflow.
