My sister is doing my family's for some reason, and she's actually traced us back really far, but then she's hitting some problems.

Like, my family name "Sondresen", is a patronymic, but the actual practice of patronymics died out in the early 1900s. She's traced back before that (which was hell--our last name has been spelled Sondresen, Sondresson, Sondreson, Sondresøn, etc.), but now she's hitting worse problems.

There was an Ole Sondresson, and his father was Sondre Oleson. Which is great, but then there are so many damn Oles and Sondres and a million other names and every one has some weird spelling variant, and North American keyboards hate Norwegian characters. And there's some random girl we've found, a Gunhild Johandatter, who is somehow related to us, but the connection is really vague, and we're not quite sure who's daughter she is, since there's four Johan's in our family in that generation.

Anyway, that was probably really boring. But my point is, my sister has assigned me the task of translating random documents (which is a sort of bad idea, since my Norwegian is pretty bad... not as bad as hers, but still pretty bad), and it's really boring.

Have any of you done genealogies, and do you have any tips? Genealogy stories? Interesting family stories? Whatever? I'd love to hear them. Ancestors are fascinating.

my stepmonster is doing mine as a 50th bday present for my dad... she found some really cool stuff...

first- i knew this one already- but my ancestors from england immigrated to massachusetts and there is a farm and country road with my family name somewhere in the sticks out there

second- my family invented the corkscrew, but did not have the patent for it..

third- my family was involved in beginning the british version of the stock exchange... so therefore we have i think its 7 castles throughout england and (scotland?) i think... the family name is in the history of the castles, but im not sure it is still "family owned" but i have the addresses and wanna check them out when i go to europe...

and thats all i know as of right now..

yeah, i gotta family tree from my grandmother before she died ( she lived a good life ) ... and there are some notables .. mainly ulysses s. grant - not directly in the family, but he was part of another family, some great(who knows how many times) cousing ( x times removed et cetera ) and i can upload it here, but eh, its not anything to be too proud of ( bfgoodrich was indeed a family business - they sold the tire portion and went on to i think airplanes... ) so... not an exactly proud of family, but proud nonetheless.

and thats just my dad's side.

i dont know much of my mother's side.

i should so some research on that. thanks andy

My family owned (well, owns) property on the Lofoten Islands. It's seriously the most breathtakingly beautiful place in the world. I vividly recall my dad taking me there when I was little, but I haven't been since.
Mostly my ancestors in Norway were farmers and fishers. Some were members of Norwegian resistence movements in WWII.
There were some relatives who married Sami women, but oddly, no women who married Sami men. Sami are sort of like to Norway/Finland/Sweden what Native Americans are to North America.

I don't know a lot about my mother's side. Her family's from England, but I don't know much more. I'm not terribly interested in England, to be honest. If I had the funds, I'd move back to Norway.

My mom did geneologies for her's and my dad's sides. I think she got them to around the late 1600's before she hit a road block. My dad's side comes from Scotland. We were originally McGregor's, but they changed their name to Greer shortly after immigrating to America. We can only speculate why they changed their names, but if any of you have studied history or watched the movie Rob Roy, which is a fact based movie, you will see that the McGregor's weren't exactly favored by the royalty there. Once the Mcgregor's, now known as Greer's, arrived in America they spoiled their bloodline by breeding in with some English. But I won't hold that against them.
As for my mom's side she is a bit English and a bit Scottish in her heritage. She was a Walker before marrying my dad. The Walkers were somehow tied in with the Royal Stuarts, though we aren't sure in what way. And, once arriving in America, somewhere along the lines, one of the Walkers had a fling with an Indian of either the Cherokee or Choctaw tribes. Most likely it was Choctaw because her family settled in Mississippi and the Choctaws were in Mississippi as well. So, a few hundred years later here I am!

Well, public records are kept on all citizens of the US. That's your first hint. Plus, some families are just really good about keeping family trees.

One of my relo's did a trace on my mothers side & it turns out that one of my ancestors was sent over to Australia as part of the First Fleet - I think that there were 11 or 12 ships full of English, Irish & Scottish criminals.

Mind you back then you were considered a criminal worth transporting if you stole a loaf of bread, or if, as a woman, you were too outspoken.

These people are the beginnings of Australia as a nation, criminals sent packing by the elitist British. No wonder we are so proud to be descended from them.

Casper was a real person and supposibly when he died they would hear chains dragging in his old house, ect. Thats when they came out with the cartoon... WE should of gotten that money! :) Its a pretty cool story. I would tell yall word for word what it said, but I cant remember it all.

I think that most Australians will agree with me when I say that sending convicts to Australia was the best decision the pommies ever made.

Come to think of it I think that most pommies will agree with that as well.
