I don't want them in charge of our heath care, but I do want some type of subsidized health insurance programs for people that cannot afford or can't get covered under private insurance on their own.

What sort of irresponsible idiot collects them and hands them back in? I'd much rather see them being used by kids who otherwise might have had unsafe sex and ended up getting an STD or an unwanted pregnancy. We have similar give aways over here from time to time. I remember when I was at college they used to sometimes have free hand outs of condoms, good idea!:clap

Seriously??? I have heard of them but I thought they were just stereotyped jokes!:eek What century exactly do they think we are living in?:willy_nilly:

There are some schools (mostly private, some public) that have abstinence programs taught. It would be a great idea if they left out the part where TEENS ARE HORNY BASTARDS! You will not stop a teen from having sex, unless you totally brainwash them or lock them in a cupboard. The only viable solution is sex education and the distribution of sex products if needed.

I'd like to point out that while some teens will not follow the advice of these programs, there are some who will. There is nothing essentially wrong with presenting all solutions so that a person can make an informed decision. To decry them as ineffectual is to downplay the decisions of those teens who do follow their advice.

In some cases the ***only*** "sex education" programs that are taught are abstinence programs. Most kids will not take them seriously, and to not provide an alternative is only harming them.

Agreed with AEF. They probably are offering good advice but seeing that, I'm guessing, a lot of teens will ignore them, there should be an alternative. A balanced and effective program should teach kids that they don't HAVE to have sex right now and are probably not ready for it, but if you do, make damn sure you use a condom and know where you can get them from.

Hey, if a teen doesn't want to have sex, more power to them. But in reality, teens are going to have sex no matter how much dogmatic material you throw at them.

I would agree that if it the ***only*** program taught, then that is unrealistic, and yes, it could ultimately harm them.
Sex is a powerful topic though. It spawns emotion, it provides a multi-million dollar industry, it's responsible for medical bills for STDs and pregnancies. It makes the world go round. ;)
There is no way to legislate what parents choose to teach their children about it, though. Common sense tells me that having a rounded wealth of information is the best way to go, and all I can hope to do is make sure my future children are well-prepared to handle the decision.

Arn't these schemes very religious based too? I'm guessing that would stop a lot of kids heeding the advice. Maybe religion is something best left out of this too.

...shot down and accused of having cooties...
Note: cooties only affect little girls.
What is "safe living"? You practice abstinence, celibacy?
