I would like your thoughts on this matter, especially from the more tech savvy. From your experience, which ones are the best? I'm currently using Microsoft Security Essentials, but I'm not so sure about it. I have read that it's pretty good, but I'm willing to change. I had Avast for a few years. It would alert me if something was trying to install itself, but I don't know how accurate it was.

MSE is actually pretty good from what I've heard. I haven't used it yet, but am tempted to give it a try.
Avast is great. i use it and have no problems.
I've also used AVG which was good for a free program.
Others I use that are great are C Cleaner, Malware Bytes, and Spybot. I used to use Ad-aware, but haven't reinstalled it so not sure how good it is anymore.

Go for a combination of avira and malware bytes. Malware bytes is without a doubt the best spyware program out there. I can't speak highly enough of it. There's a new update every day.

There does seem to be a consensus towards Avira. I just recently installed Malwarebytes. It seems to be good. I also have a program called RKill, which stops malicious processes.

i gave up on the freebies, broke down and laid out 40 bucks for a year subscription for spyware doctor with antivirus.

with the freebies, and lots of them, something would happen every few weeks. since june there's only been one incident and it was really unavoidable because i had just gotten a different computer and it took a few days to get the thing activated in the new machine.

a few unprotected days was all the cyberterrorists needed. but then i got the program activated and the problem was gone.

It is good, but it has known to fail to pick up viruses/trojans until I do a full scan on my system, my best bet is to stay with MSE because that happens with all virus scanners
