Why settle for minimum wage law? Let the market forces decide and more people could be employed especially during a recession.

WASHINGTON -- As the recession continues to weigh heavily on the livelihoods of millions, the Fox News Channel on Monday suggested that lowering the minimum wage could be "better for workers."
"The minimum wage is kind of like a sacred cow in Washington, with many, many lawmakers thinking it's a win-win for low-skilled workers," said Fox anchor Juliet Huddy. "But what if those good intentions backfired?"

The minimum wage law is a useless concept other than as a political decoy to fool the uninformed. It should be abolished.

Minimum wage laws haven't been nearly as great over here in the UK as the're hyped up to be, especially when the minimum wage is far too shit for the average family man to live on anyway.

Yup.

The minimum wage law creates a floor in the labor market. Whenever the government sets a higher minimum wage, that decreases the demand for workers by businesses. If businesses decide to not cut their worker base, then they merely just pass the higher cost onto the consumer.

You honestly believe that the lowest paying job should bring in enough income to support a family??
The single 16 or 18-year-old will take that as base and will expect more when he gets married and has kids. Then what? Raise the wage to match the new expectancy?

So when an employee has his 19th birthday, his boss has to give him a raise whether he likes it or not? Whether the kid does a decent job or not?

I spose the boss isn't allowed to say "Sorry kid, I can't afford you any more."

I'm sure the're ways round that which is one reason why the minimum wage law dosen't work. Its like the maternity leave one. A lot of factories I've worked at wont employ teenage girls because they know there's a good chance of them getting up the duff, taking maternity pay and never coming back. Of course they cant say that but its easy to find some excuse not to employ someone or give them the sack, same as it is with a kid coming up to his or hers 18th birthday.

This is one of those "no shit" kind of stories.

Labor is no different than any other resource, if its worth less than the cost, people don't buy it. Therefore if the minimum cost is $7.50/hour and your work is only worth $6/hour, then your ass is gonna be in the unemployment line. Real simple...
