When I was a kid 45rpm records were about 75 cents and had a song on each side.
The first two I remember buying were:

"Brandy" by The Looking Glass
"Sunshine" by Jonathan Edwards

What were your purchases & what format?

I actually own some 78's which include some Hank Williams originals. I even have a copy of Gene Autry's Christmas album on vinyl too.

The first music I ever owned was the album Automatic for the People - REM.

I didn't buy it though, my dad gave it to me illegally, I can't remember what CD I bought first myself.

First I ever BOUGHT was a 7" single of Bay City Rollers "Saturday Night", although I inherited hundreds of singles from my brothers and sisters before that. First full length album was Sweet - "Desolation Boulevard." I still have it :)
