I don't even think I can put Thriller in the running, because it has a life of it's own. It's my top choice, but I'll go with my second favorite for the sake of this thread :)

I can't put the vids up from my phone, but either of 'Beat It' or 'Dirty Diana' are okay by me due to the wonderful efforts of Eddie Van Halen and Stevie Stevens

Very true - in many ways. Unfortunately, one of those ways was that it conditioned fans to be perfectly accepting of stars lip synching their performances, as long as they were dancing their asses off at the same time. Started a trend that music is still reeling from today.

OK...potentially stupid question, but are we sure he was lip syncing? The rest of the show was live. I just watched it again and the song has a ton of layering in it, but I think he's actually singing the main vocal track...

Who really cares... He originally recorded the song so why the big deal if he lip syncs? It's not like fucking Milli Vanilli.

Totally and completely lip synching. First and foremost - he was singing to the original studio recording. Second clue - the fade out. In live performances, the musicians end a song, they can't "fade." Third, his mouth frequently doesn't match the vocals.

It's not a big deal, really. It's quite common on awards shows and special events like that to lip synch. Hell - American Bandstand was totally lip-synched for decades. My only point was that before Michael, it was usually only in certain circumstances. Everyone knows MJ was a gifted singer and sang all his own music (and harmonies too) But once he started the "dance-first, sing-second" line of thinking in concerts - it naturally progressed to the point where the guys in suits figured "Hell, we can just get great dancers and have them PRETEND to sing. No one cares anyway!"
