PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The father of Rhode Island's first baby of 2008 faces deportation after being arrested for violating immigration laws, while his roommate, also an illegal immigrant, was found dead of a suspected suicide hours after the arrest.
Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Mynor Montufar at his apartment Friday after local newspapers and television stations showed him and Carmen Marrero as parents of the first baby born in the state after the new year rolled in, officials said.
ICE spokeswoman Paula Grenier said the timing of Montufar's arrest was coincidental to the publicity surrounding his child. Another man also was arrested at the apartment, although Grenier would not identify him, citing agency policy.

Well thought's on this?

I am not quite sure where I stand on it. He really didn't break any law's aside from immigration law's...Which are quite interpretive works of legal-ese artwork anyways.

I think the headline news was the simple fact that if he hadn't been the father of the first baby of 2008 .. no one would have known about his immigration status.

The media could help in this matter .. the public will probably petition and come to his defense, he'll probably get a free lawyer to boot.

Our government is the same here - they don't have a clue how many illegal immigrants we have here, let alone how long they have been here or how they got here.

It would be the same here too, if any immigrants had a baby at a time like new year and was publicised in the papers or on the news, deportation talks would take place.

The media does sensataionalize most of what they write, but in this case, it would seem they haven't and I wonder what will happen for that person. The chances are, as Jen says, he will get a lawyer and be given legal stay. Or, could he be made an example of and be deported???
