Somebody brought up the subject(In class today) of people having "soul mates" and it being destiny and everybody having their own fate and all that shit, and it got me thinking about the whole free will debate and everything.

Do you think it really exists?

Referring back to the debate of omniscience vs free will, if fate and/or destiny does exist, then obviously our whole lives are planned out, disproving free will. But when I brought this topic up at lunch today, this kid was freaking out and shit, and saying things like, "No! We do have destiny, but free will allows us to choose our own destiny!". Or something like that.

Personally, I don't really think that everybody's entire life is all planned out down to the very last detail, because it sounds ridiculous. If you think fate/destiny exists, then basically, that's saying, "Well, God wanted me to wear this nail-polish today, or put that bra on, or get that speeding ticket", or whatever it may be.

I dont know about having an entire life planned out and all that, as you dont know whats going to happen, each step you take in your life is something you decide, you choose your own destiny.
As for soul mates i do beleive that they exsist and there is that perfect someone out there for everyone, call me niave, however i feel that some people can go their entire lives without finding their perfect puzzle peice that completes them and makes them a great person.

I don't believe in destiny or fate. We make our own choices in life. No matter what anyone says, it's YOUR choice to do something. YOU make the choice, YOU face the consequences. The ONLY thing that we don't have control over are other people's actions, and death. We may make our own choices, but that doesn't mean that other peoples' choices won't affect us. That's not fate or destiny, but another person's choice beginning to affect you.

I don't believe in soul mates. The likelihood of anyone ever finding one on a planet with billions is miniscule.

I believe that God knows each person's strengths and may "steer" them toward a happier life. (I am not wanting any debate on why I'd think this. Any comments about God's motives are not welcome.)

lol, Well seeing your point of view it makes me think differently about my thoughts. I kinda always beleived things happen for a reason but there are some things that are just horrible and there really is no reason for stuff like that to happen. So, Who knows!

Fatalism is irrational...but Determinism is considerably more annoying because it's so hard to counter. I'm still trying to forumulate an effective argument against it.

I think that fate/Destiny does exist and that you decide your own fate.
It's like take a step and each step decides what your 'future' will be like and what is 'right' or 'wrong' but then there you would have to decide.
