How did they think that was a good idea? They can do tornado drills without making kids believe there's a tornado...

I heard this on the radio today... I guess in their minds they thought maybe this would help them if something like this happend for real. But thats not for them to decide... those kids are young. If I was their mom I would be flipping out. What happen if one of those kids had a heart attack or something because of the stress? Those poor kids.

I didn't read in the article that the parents were made aware of this drill in advance. Nor did I read that the children were informed of any future precaution training that was going to be taking place in case a situation like VA Tech were to occur on their own campus.

If I am understanding what I am reading correctly, some of the school staff just sprang this 'ambush' of a situation on these children. I can not even begin to comment on the lack of wisdom of this decision.

These are suppose to be educated people that we should feel at ease entrusting our children to. But the staff's total lack of wisdom does nothing to build trust. Their lack of decision making skills need to be addressed immediately, and they should have nothing to do with leading or educating our children. I think it would be much more appropriate for them their selves to go back to school. I think it is obvious they missed a few courses.

If I was a parent and they did that to my child. I would be out for blood, litteraly. I would break the first male face I could find that had something to do with it.

Disciplinary Action Announced by Director of Schools

Director of Schools Marilyn Mathis has suspended lead teacher, Mr. Quentin Mastin, and assistant principal, Don Bartch, for unprofessional conduct and neglect of duty due to actions taken with Scales Elementary School students on May 10, 2007 at Fall Creek Falls State Park. The suspension is without pay and will commence on May 14, 2007 and continue through the end of this school year ending June 1, 2007.

If only all those children had been packing heat, things would have turned out just fine.

Eleven is a little young for a kid to be confronting his own mortality...

I think that the terror those 11 year olds must have felt negates any lesson they were supposed to have learned. Also, god forbid, they ever do experience a school shooting...upon hearing the gunfire what if any of them think, "maybe this is just another drill".

I think that's absolutely terrible!! "Poor judgement" indeed.
