Do you think the internet will phase out the reading or necessity of books?

The internet beats books on almost every level. It has more information because a book is only limited to the information within its pages. It is also more convenient than driving to a library.

The internet beats libraries, not books.

I'll google for information, but I still buy books for pleasure.

I like my Kindle. But I LOVE books. <3

Many of the books that I own have been read, re-read, notes put in the margins, pages folded over with favourite passages underlined.

So, no. I think for true bibliophiles, paper books will always be around.

Books will become a thing of the past just like newspapers are becoming

The cost to digitize a book versus printing is just too great

That is not saying books will be extinct. But I would bet they will be rarer and rarer to find and get more costly.

I like the feel of a book also. But just about everybody I know that has a Kindl loves em and don't plan on going back to books.

I enjoy reading a newspaper daily. When they cut back to only a limited home delivery I was stuck with reading the paper online. I have become used to it.

Time moves on whether we want it to or not I am afraid.

considering i have to stand in line for over 15 minutes everytime i am at the book store, and considering that most people in front of me behind me and me myself, are in line with at least 5 or more books...i'd say we are far from seeing the end of the paper book. ...and thank goodness for that! I love a good book and i really do not like those kobos or kindles or etc...

Right now that is incorrect.

Anybody, regardless of credentials, can contribute to Wikipedia (or the like); all they need is a source, which by and large means just a URL unvetted against unreliability, obscurity and partisan ideology.
Books are written by people who, by and large, have devoted their livelihood to their field of expertise. They will have been taught, and subsequently researched and taught in that field for years.

Maybe in the future, we will have websites that publications and institutes use to add material from their authors, but their aren't many of them right now, and they are not updated anywhere near as quickly as books come out.

I love books and will always be someone who frequents the library. But if Kindles and suchlike will open up the love of reading to people such as my husband then here here!

Somehow reading a laptop when I'm on the shitter just dosen't have that same level of comfort.

But get the laptop going while having a bath, light up a cigar and have a drink...
I think it's as close as us normal folk can get to living the life of an Arabian dictator :D

...can see the headlines now - Man dies in freak accident when his laptop electricuted him in the bath and the cab sav and cigar he was smoking burnt his body. The risk of soggy pages is much more comforting. :D

I don't know...I think it might. The younger generation is all about instant gratification, if they can download it they will.
