Endangered Species- Newsweek talking about responsible Republicans. Newt Gingrich and William Kristol, thank you very much for destroying the Republican Party. This article describes how the Republican party moved from bipartisan cooperation to zero-sum, obstructionist "our way or the highway".

Do you remember the Responsible Republicans? In the 1980s small herds of them still roamed around Washington. In 1982 they stampeded over Ronald Reagan's veto of a tax increase designed to mitigate the fiscal harm of his 1981 tax cut. In 1986 they passed bipartisan immigration reform. In 1990 they were spotted with President George H.W. Bush at Andrews Air Force Base, conspiring to reduce the deficit.

The rise of hyperpartisanship is not one of those problems for which left and right are equally to blame. Democrats—who like legislating better than Republicans do, and who have seldom had the GOP's ability to march in lockstep—still instinctively prefer to work on a bipartisan basis. They continue to hope, against the odds, that Double-Rs will escape extinction and return as potential partners. Perhaps Ted Turner will find a way to breed them on his ranch.

Democrats are willing and have always been willing to compromise. Today that attitude does not exist in the majority of the Republican party. Its a fact and it is contrary to a functional Congress.

that's hilarious... do you honestly believe the rhetoric that you spew? The Democrats obviously compromised with the health care monstrosity that they shoved down our throats. The same with Cap and Trade, that was a huge compromise too. Give me a break. Both sides try and shove their agenda down our throats when they have power. To think otherwise is incredibly ignorant and naive.

The Republicans insist on unrealistic one sided solutions that meet their agenda. If you won't play by their rules, then they won't play. Compromise is not in their vocabulary. It's been going on for years regardless of how you feel about it.

Republicans, democrats, tea party, abortion, death tax, socialism, guns, religion, blahh, blahh, blah
Nothing but smoke and mirrors while the country is stolen right out from under us. Keep us all fighting and distracted and pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

This very well may be the first time I've actually agreed with something you've had to say.

They don't play by the rules set down for them by the party in power. Both sides are guilty of that. You honestly wonder why I call you a Democrat? Because everything that you say tells me that you are, and you consistently defend that party while attacking the other.

You'd like me to say something bad about Democrats? As a generalization, not representing all Democrats, they want too much government, too many social programs, they are not flexible enough to alter those programs enough when they run into financial difficulty, and they don't hold people accountable enough.

I agree with Tim. I also think that complete gridlock in Washington might be the very best thing for the country. I can't think of a single law that needs to be added at the federal level, though I'm sure I could find thousands that should be repealed.

The ubber rich, the handful that run the world

A really good reason why Socialism or some form of a hybrid Capitalism-Socialism should be considered as a viable alternative to straight Capitalism. :ninja But in all cases the system is only as good as the integrity of running the System. Think about this, in Capitalism only ideas that make money are pursued. Is that the standard the human race should be striving for? Health care is one area where profits should not be the driving factor.

I've eluded to this before. All of early man's motivations were based on individual survival. Modern man uses a modernized survival system set up to benefit self. At some point the human race should evolve to a point where survival is no longer the issue. The emphasis will become self improvement and group well being. I'm not saying it is today, but the change will emphasis we, not me.
