I was reading somewhere the other day about this that a bill in the state legislature would require all people who have three or more convictions for DWI to have a bright neon pink license plate that starts with "DWI". Do you agree with this? (Im not sure if this is just an Arkansas thing or what, I cant seem to remember where I read it to go back and look at it again..sorry)

I don't drink and drive, and twice in my life I've been hit by a drunk driver, so I'm perfectly OK with it.

*waits for AEF to come defend the poor drunks*

I'm fine with this as well.

Though I think if the person has gone a certain number of years, say 5 to 10 years, without a DWI they should be able to go back to the regular license plate.

I agree with consequences, but there also needs to be a way for these people to redeem themselves. People can change.

I don't have a problem with it, but what's the reason behind it? Just to humiliate them?

Lessons in humility are the best ones, but the hardest to learn. Damn pride.

I also think that with almost everyone having cell phones, that if people notice this person weaving in and out of traffic, it may cause them to call the police a little sooner on them.

I've used my cell phone to call the police when I've witnessed someone driving with road rage.

Im perfectly fine with that. I think after 3 DWIs... what are they doing being able to drive again? Especially if its in a short amount of time.

Fuck no

Everyone deserves privacy. Having your license in pink and having 'DWI' is just there to mock the person, not to solve the actual problem. Everyone makes mistakes, everyone deserves a second chance, no exceptions.

This is for people with 3 convictions. Does everyone deserve a 4th chance too?

Does everyone deserve to be ridiculed every time they get on the streets? Take away their license, put them in jail, make them attend a class, in other words: give them a real punishment, not some bullshit medieval practice.

Should we just put everything every person does wrong and call it a day?

Also, generally speaking, criminal records are public record. DUI/DWI's also appear in the paper. So this is not a matter of privacy at this point.

I'm sure that will be part of their consequences as well.

When my husband was 19 he got locked up for a DWI and spent 3 months in jail. He got out early because of his good behavior. He wasnt even old enough to drink. Its been 10 years now and he rarely ever even takes a sip of a beer. He got the second chance... and learned his lesson from his first mistake. But I guess not everyone is that smart. Its a shame that people need 2, 3 more chances to realize they are making a huge mistake once they get on the road after they have been drinking. If your stupid enough to get in the car after you have been drinking (after your first time of getting caught), then you should deal with the fact that you can drive your car around with a bright pink sticker on your plate.

You dont think the shame might help them change their damaging habits? After 3 prior offenses why not try something new?

While I think DWI's are despicable, this is just humiliation for humiliations sake. Plus, having them have a special license plate solves nothing at all. Just take their license away and make them attend special classes.

Shame is a negative approach to making someone learn from their mistakes.
