I've tried experimenting doing an offline upscale by converting with Xilisoft's converter to HD res rather than letting my PS3 do it.

Happy with the better quality, I thought I'd try with some of my dvd collection so I can store them away, In particular 'classics' such as the Alien set, LOTR etc etc and then plonk them on my Nas drive to play.

Thing is - whatever extract proggy I use, the vobs have the wrong random time - e.g. 6 mins 35 sec, 11:25, 0:37 etc. Combined - the times don't add up to the length of the movie but the movie does play all the way through.

Even when combining and outputting via Xilisoft - the final upscaled file contains the wrong time even though it plays ok. buggers up forward/reverse though due to the wrong time.

I've tried Dvd Shrink, Dvd Decryptor, AnyDvd's extract but all produce Vobs that don't reflect their time correctly.

Just wondering if anyone out there has done anything similar and what proggies may have been used to extract vobs (with the correct time on the vobs).

Thanks Poopa. I tried that but it didn't like AnyDvd and wanted to hardset the region on my drive. I let it but same result. Making a copy of my DVDs is no problem, any of the programs achieve that including dvdFab but where they fall down is creating a vob(s) with the correct time.

I'll try demuxing etc tomorrow- could be issues with the ac3 audio and timing thereof.

The simplest things always end up being complicated!

You probably already know this but,
You might want to make sure the ripping program that you use knows that you are ripping disks in PAL(European) format rather than NTSC(American). Different frame rates.;)

Most don't give you an option that I saw - they just let you pick which titles and audio you want etc. The movie plays ok so I guess the ripping must have kinda worked - except for the time thing. But aye, simple things like that I've certainly overlooked in things before so thanks for reminding me.

I tried out Magic DVD Ripper for a short bit when I was doing some research and it seemed to do just fine for me.

I thought this would be just like all the others. This one has a convert option too. I wanted the vobs because I didn't want the extract proggy to do any processing - leaving that to Xilisoft's converter for when I upscale.

I looked at the convert and it had an 'original mpeg2' which it claimed would extract the file as a single mpg and not affect quality or audio/video bitrate - getting me what I wanted albeit it in another form (mpg rather than vob).

I tried it - it complained about Any dvd so I uninstalled that and then tried Alien again. It worked... the time on the file correctly read 1:51:05! Shocked, I checked it and the 4gb file played fine in test spots with no AV sync issues.

I tried with another region2 (Aliens, as my drive was hardcoded to R2 now) - no problems and correct time again.

I'm now trying with a R1 dvd (as I have about half and half R1/R2s) and it's converting so far. I wondered if it would get past the region protection as AnyDvd wasn't loaded anymore and it seems to work fine so far.

I may well have to buy this proggy if the upconvert in Xilisoft doesn't have any issues. :)
