College presidents from about 100 of the best-known U.S. universities, including Duke, Dartmouth and Ohio State, are calling on lawmakers to consider lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18, saying current laws actually encourage dangerous binge drinking on campus.

What do you think about that idea?

It seems ridiculous to me that you yanks can go off and fight and die for your country, get married, vote, drive, from all sorts of ages but can't buy a beer or similar until 21...

You could do what a lot of european countries do and have staggered drinking ages, according to alcohol proof %

Kids are going to drink whatever the laws says anyway, it's never too hard for them to get booze, better they do it legally. I think it's far more important to educate them from a young age about responsible drinking that slap age limits on. Customer service dictates things a lot anyway, the age limit over here is 18 but many pubs wont let you in till you're 21, mainly because their patrons dont want to be annoyed by a bunch of pissed up teenagers.

Bump....

As peter said, kids will drink anyway, even though i dont agree with it...i dont think it should be made "taboo", that just entices them to break the rules.

Saying that, i still get asked for I.D..*flutters eyelashes*...paaahhaaa.

Me too. If your an adult your an adult.

Hmmm, maybe we should push the driving age back to 21. I see a lot of juvenile idiots out there driving. :humm: ;)

I say let each state make up it's own laws on what the drinking age should be like they used to do.
Unless there is some concrete evidence that proves having it at 21 actually reduced the amount of drunk driving accidents, I see no reason to not have it at 18.

I think how and why you drink is something that should be taught at home and not be something laws prohibit. Responsible drinking starts at the home base....BUT saying that, kids who come from alcoholic homes where drinking is encouraged need the law to protect them... I think so long as a young adult or older teenager is with their family then there shouldn't be a problem...

Without a parent....well if you can die for your country then you should be able to drink to your country too....I live on a boarder town and all the yanky kids come over here because our age limit is 19 not 21....19 to me is too old...

It all comes down to not making thing taboo....as thats were it becomes "cool" to try it.

Age drinking limit has never really stopped me much when it came down to it when I was a teenager, out here we're doing fine with the age limit being 18. 18 is a very reasonable age as well, you graduate highschool and starting your way of becoming a young adult. It's just drinking responsibily is a flaw for some people, some do and some don't but you can't fault an entire state full of young adults with one stupid incident or done by so few compared to the whole population.

Just one thing which kinda pisses me off is that in our province is doing this, so unfair :D

Sounds like the same big brother shit the government is trying to pull over here. It will never wash because it will do too much damage to business. I can make money after travel expenses as it is going over to France for the day and buying cheap booze there. It's already happened with tobacco. I buy all mine on the black market from a guy who ships it over from Spain and it costs me half the price of in the shops.

Yeah I don't like how the business side of it is like, we're doing the same thing in our province, the taxes here on tabacco products is very crazy, it's probably around 12-15 dollars for a 25 pack of ciggs. Which I can get somewhere else for half the price. What happened to personal choice than allowing the goverment take control of how we have fun or doing something by personal choice. We know the consequences, we're not stupid either. :/

Most countries have drinking and driving around the same age, nothing too bad is happening over there, so why not change it here?

The legal age here in Aus is 18 and because of the fact that they binge drink so much the government has actually raised taxes on alcohol making all prices rise. Thus annoying the crap out of Adults. I wish it was at 21 but I know no matter what we think they are all still going to drink underage.
