A recent survey in North America found that many kids and adults did not get enough Vitamin D in their regular diet..

Vitamin D is not only essential for Calcium absorption but can also help your positive frame of mind as being an added "Sunshine" boost when the sun is out of sight..

I have been taking an extra 400 IU / day on top of my multi vitamin and have found a great improvement in my attitude and lack of depression. To me it has made a difference worth sharing.

Vitamin D is essential for promoting calcium absorption in the gut and maintaining adequate serum calcium and phosphate concentrations to enable normal mineralization of bone and prevent hypocalcemic tetany. It is also needed for bone growth and bone remodeling by osteoblasts and osteoclasts [3,4,5]. Without sufficient vitamin D, bones can become thin, brittle, or misshapen. Vitamin D sufficiency prevents rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults [2,6,7]. Together with calcium, vitamin D also helps protect older adults from osteoporosis.

Vitamin D has other roles in human health, including modulation of neuromuscular and immune function and reduction of inflammation. Many genes encoding proteins that regulate cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis are modulated in part by vitamin D [3,5,8,9]. Many laboratory-cultured human cells have vitamin D receptors and some convert 25(OH)D to 1,25(OH)2D [10]. It remains to be determined whether cells with vitamin D receptors in the intact human carry out this conversion.

Not yet other than drinking lots of milk and taking a multivitamin. I'll add that to my list of questions to my doctor when I see her in June. :)

Yes...we dont suffer from lack of sun light here...I have always been a believer in the health benefits of "getting out in the sunshine". Dont need a supplement though. Have plenty of the real stuff on hand

All my kids have had sun exposure....but not burning.

I take a 50's + multi-vitamin every day. A few months ago I had some blood work done and one of the tests the doc ran was to check those levels. He said the results were great. I then told him what I took and he agreed it was a good thing so I pop one in the hatch every day.

There's still nothing better than real sunshine but in the fall, winter and spring it can be a rare commodity right Francis.

Never heard it helps with weight

as to the mental part I doubt it will help

Hi Allen, If you read the link I provided it gives some info plus should you Google Vitamin D you would see a lot of research on the topic..

I believe the logic is that, should someone have more Vitamin D, they feel more positive and that in turn can only help make everything better.. It certainly boost the immune system and that can only be a bonus..

Vitamin supplements are under debate here in Europe. There is soon to be a law passed making them remove any health claims on their bottles as there simply isn't any proof that taking vitamins in tablet form does you any good at all.

Vegetables, fruit and a bit of sunshine is all you need :)

I might be confusing with another vitamin but I thought taking too much D could give you problems

Ed not everybody eats a well balanced diet. Those that do might not need any vitamins. For me it has helped a lot with sinus flare ups

Oh I know, and it's one of the sad reminders of the sorry state the world is in: it's easier and cheaper to eat crap than to eat healthy :(

There are lots of people who take vitamins and other OTC stuff that think it's okay to do so. I mean.... If it's on the shelves at your local store.... it's got to be safe, right?

Those on prescribed meds need to be particularly careful for sure. Drug interactions and all that.

I'm sure you can take too much of vitamins, but if you are prescribed to do so because of how low your body's vit d levels are and because you body disposes of it too fast then I'm pretty sure the doctor knows what they are doing by prescribing higher amounts.
