Do you trust the mainstream media?

Do you watch news? Do you mainly depend on mainstream media? Do you think that mainstream media gives unbiased side of stories despite the fact that most of them are there not mainly as watchdog of the people but most importantly as business?

I personally like to be more critic and depend not only on what the mainstream media is spreading but also to look for more possibilities of truth by considering the alternative sources such as alternative media. Sad to say, I see mainstream as a weak source of real and objective source of news nowadays.

Mainstream media is such a blanket term. It's kind of one of my pet peeves -- no offense.

You are absolutely right though, always, always, always take everything you hear with a grain of salt -- whether it be from the "mainstream" media or the weekly in your town that always claims to cover what the other guys don't. Especially now, news is driven by page hits and views and Facebook likes and shares. This puts the happier, fluffy stuff on top, mixed now and then with something so shocking it causes people to view it for morbid curiosity. Gone, to a large extent, are daily life stories, like LIFE magazine used to do.

But the media does do a lot of good in pursuit of this sort of thing, too. Think about the Snowden leaks, we would have never known about those were it not for a giant media company. Or the abuses at Walter Reed Hospital a few years back.

Always be skeptical, always ask questions, but also try and stay informed. And a lot of the larger media sources you see can help you do that.

In my opinion we have no choice but to trust mainstream media. For the past decades i think that they have been giving us relevant data and i think that they will keep doing so as their companies get bigger and bigger. The truth is always unearthed and there are still some people out there that have integrity and will do whatever it takes to bring light to the world.

No, there are only lies and more lies. We are manipulated and brainwashed by the modern media where nothings is true just an illusion of reality. I stopped watching TV 6 years ago, and I get all my information from trusted sites on the internet.

Mainstream media is a way to get people to believe what they say is true. I am not 100% sure about mainstream media is the way to believe in things because I think some of them are lies. I only trust the ones what I think it's actually happening because you cannot really make up stories like those. I have to really search around on the internet to make sure which news are true and which are lies.

There is zero trust with me towards the mainstream media. The media now is just a business and they are paid out to spread what ever propaganda they can. I stopped watching the news a long time ago and haven't tuned in since.

I'm with the rest of this thread. I'll tune in sometimes, but I'm not 100% trusting. I have to have some faith in the system or I'll just be living under a rock, but I really don't trust the TV news most of the time.

I've given up. Seeing how much is going on right now that they won't lay a finger on, but they'll be all over what the celebs are up to.. no, I don't trust them. They're also bought and paid for.. leaving out what's important, ignoring progress, all the fear-mongering. I stay away from the news.. I keep up with what's actually important in other ways.

I find the mainstream media funny. It can be the case that you can see right through the lies, if you know what you are looking for. Mainstream media is payed for and totally biased. It's a shame people take it word for word these days.
