We don't have a freezer so we buy food on a weekly basis and attempt to use it all before it goes off. There have definitely been times when the best before date was two days previous and we end up eating something anyway because it smells and tastes fine :ninja so far, no deaths.

Do you stretch the date you can eat something by, or throw things out as soon as that date passes?

Usually yes, If it's say meat for sandwiches for example I throw it out if it's past date because I had a bad experience once. Frozen food not so much.

depends what it is really, I'm a bit funny with food, If I get an idea in my head that something might be off I'll start feeling ill even if it was fine :/

All food usually keeps a day or two longer than stated.

Personally, I don't really pay attention to BBD's. I prefer to smell/feel the food to see if it's gone off, because it can even if it's within it's best before date.

I use the smell-test too. Especially with meat. It will tell you if it's off:yuk

I have seen Codrus eat leftovers from our fridge that I thought would kill him and have told him so. He still lives. I think he too has a touch of Lupin in him

If it smells good and looks good, I'll use it. For the most part.

Well, I'm still alive :)

I always worry about dairy products, because when they go bad they really go bad, at alarming speed. It's hard to be too bothered about anything else if I can't actively see mould growing on it.

Pretty much though you have to remember that bbf dates are the dates they can sell the food up to, not the date the food is inedible by.

There are sell by dates and "expiration" dates.

I use them as a guide line, and will eat stuff a few days past the date so long as it doesn't knock me on my ass when I open it.

I have yet to dig in the meat bargain bin at the commissary. It's frozen and a lot of it looks freezer burned.

I pour milk out on the date on the jug. I don't smell it or try to convince myself it will be ok. I just check the date and if its today its going down the drain.

If it's expired I throw it. That goes for everything. I don't know why I'm so bad now because growing up I know I'd do the smell test first. All meat goes straight into my freezer and doesn't come out til up to two days before I will use it. If I forget it I usually just throw it.

I couldn't imagine not having a freezer. If I had more room I would have a deep freeze as well, but alas I do not.
