Aspartame is awful stuff. I kicked the chemical habit. if you haven't you NEED to. I remember I came off it last year and I had withdrawals and shakes like a frigging drug addict.

I drank Diet Pepsi everyday and with ruthless abandon.

Yes, yes I do and I aint gonna get off it. I'm addicted and the headaches and energy lag are too much. I will never have another Energy drink again though!

Everything in moderation.
Moderation isn't easy with chemicals like this. Aspartame is in A LOT of food products labeled sugar free. i quit it cold turkey and I'm never going back. Did you know they think Aspartame causes MS?

It's kind of unsurprising that ingesting too much of anything can make you sick.

I mean, drinking soft drinks, diet or not, every single day? I drink more of them than I did when I was a kid because my mum was very strict about how much sugar we had, but even now I'm not getting excessive amounts.

If you have a healthy and varied diet then you shouldn't end up addicted to these sorts of chemicals. I appreciate why it happens and if you've got a link to that study about it potentially causing MS then I'd be interested to see it, but it's not like it's an unavoidable evil.

There was a study published recently that stated people who drink diet drinks (one a day) for 10 years have a 50% increased chance of heart attack and stroke.

Glad you got off diet pop Dana. :thumbup

Aspartame is bad stuff. I've done quite a bit of research and despite what the FDA would have you believe aspartame is not safe and very bad for you. For instance, did you know that it was once listed by the Pentagon as a prospective biochemical warfare weapon? Not to mention the three components of aspartame individually have been shown to either stimulate the brain cells to point of death, upset hormone balances in the brain, or act as a nerve poison.

This was the most disturbing information I found: There was a study done showing when a diet drink containing aspartame is stored at a temperature of 85 degrees for a week or more there is no aspartame left in the soft drink, just the components it breaks down into, like formaldehyde, formic acid, and diketopiperazine, a chemical which can cause brain tumors. All of these substances are toxic to humans.

If you want to read up on food safety try The End of Food by Thomas F. Pawlick or The Hundred-Year Lie by Randall Fitzgerald.

I used to drink tons of aspartme based drinks and now I've weened myself off it too. Well, nearly - maybe a maximum of once a week. Otherwise, it's juices (not from concentrate), smoothies or just plain old tea/water and normal pop.

Nope totally dislike that awful chemical sweetness on those artificial sugars :yuk

FYI: artificial sugars were mainly discovered after one scientist was making powdered form of rat killer :eek Accidentally, it tasted sweet, so they took out the poisonous stuff and sold it as artificial sugar :eek

Totally chemical based. Bad for anyone's healthsad.gif :thumbdown

This is what I don't get... Is that people would rather drink a chemical poison sweetener over sugar. Seriously?

If want the occasional soft drink, pick up the one with sugar in it. A little sugar isn't going to make you fat but a little poison can kill you. :dunno

There will never be artificial sweeteners or products in our house.

I used to drink a diet coke atleast once a day. I stopped drinking soda all together for a couple months and now I'll have a diet coke probably once every couple weeks, if that.
I've never thought to look in foods though. I'll have to do that.

It took me a long time to get that in my head. I drink a soda called Zevia that use the Stevia plant. It's an all natural sweetener that doesn't effect your body the way the others do. It also helps keep your blood pressure down. The body doesn't absorb it say the way it does sucralose or maltitol. If I'm out at a restuarant I will have a regular soda. When I first got off aspartame, I drank Pepsi Throwback.

I haven't had pop in years....I tend to drink a lot of water. I'm so proud of you Dana, I think that was a smart move ( do you think that cutting out pop has in any way contributed to your weight loss?)

I don't want the calories, hence, diet coke. Some people smoke to take the edge off their appetite, which do you think is worse for you? I don't nag smokers, u don't nag me (in person) ;)

I'm guzzling a diet coke as I type, yup 3rd ingredient aspartame, YUMMMMMMM good stuff!

I cant talk doll, I drink a ton of coffee in the run of a day. True, no aspartame, but caffeine is just as bad for you 'they' say...lol.
