They say you should disconnect your broadband connection after every use to prevent attacks from malicious users. But do you?

I don't I find it pointless. If I wanted to disconnect everytime I used the internet Id go back to dial up.

That is more or less for people who don't have protection on their computers. So if you don't have your firewall up along with some virus protection it is safest to disconnect, but if you have them up and running it's really pointless.

I do not disconnect ever unless I need to restart my comp.

i'm always online. if i wanted to go offline i'd have to turn off my network card since other computers use my network.

I use my computer throughout different times of the day, so it (along with the connection) is always on. I usually shut it down or put it in to standby before I go to bed though.

Despite popular belief, if you have a router and leave your internet on, you can easily bruteforce into a network, despite firewalls. However, most teh time its pointless to do so. It is always much safer to simply disconnect from a network after use, or turn off your PC.

I run on cable and my connection is always up and going.... I shut down my pc every night and so long as I am not gaming the pc is off because well that is all I really do.

Several yrs back I bought a Dell server as a development server for my house. I got it up and runnig but did not install any patches or software and left it running while I went to school. This was a direct connection with no router!
When I came back someone had made it its some kind of media server, there was all kinds of stuff in it, loads and loads of music, videos and what not.. I logged off and was not able to log back in.

Had to have my brother come to my place, wipe the wwhole thing and start over with new patches and what not. this was quite a few yrs ago so I imagine that getting into the intternet W/O a router and or some kind of firewall would be pretty fuckign dumb.

What I am tryign to say is that so long as you are behind a router youre somewhat safe SOMEWHAT... the only way you can be risk free of viruses is to:
A. something other than a windows machine
B. stay away from the internet
