I don't usually delve into these types of threads but a person's continuous feeds on Facebook earlier yesterday got me wondering. Maybe it's my history of doubt in the past but do you think that these people who claim God has come to them in their dreams or have spoken with them have been programmed to believe so through rigorous attendance of devout church following? I mean if you hear something over and over and over you're bound to believe it's possible if it's engrained in you daily/weekly.

I'm not an overly religious person but I do believe in God and I do believe that God teaches me lessons by some things that he allows to happen in my life.

I believe in God... Religion is indeed bullshit.. This kinda made me chuckle...

Billy Graham's daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane Clayson asked her: “How could God let something like this happen?” (regarding Hurricane Katrina). Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said: “I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we've been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?”

"profound and insightful"? Give me a break.:p Obviously Ms. Graham has missed the point of a secular nation. Obviously Christianity is the only true religion, but hey Jews and Muslims believe in God. Let's institute one of those religions in our schools, govt, and lives and see how welcoming of God, Ms. Graham becomes. Oh yeah, that's the point for being secular...

Or for her, is it just more religious psychosis at work! ;)

Ask ten different psychiatrists about whether these folks suffer from a religious psychosis or not, get ten different opinions.

Can you describe how you came to believe in God and that he controls events in your life?

I admit, often I have the feeling that there are big wheels turning behind the screen, but they remain hidden. Based on the good things that have happened in my life, and the relatively few bad things, I might assume that I'm blessed, but that is all it is, an assumption and I would never claim a deity is helping me or be so presumptuous as to claim a blessed nature. (Not saying you are presumptuous.)

Although I have a feeling of well being, I wonder how I would feel if I lived in poverty in an area with constant life-threatening turmoil? Is it brain chemicals or a community of spirits with the promise of better things to come?

I'm undecided when it comes to God if he/she is real then, i tell you what i got a few questions for him/she if i ever get to that heavenly gate!!!! As for people saying he/she has come to them in their dreams or talked to them in some way i might send them in the direction of the local loony bin. I like to believe we decide our own paths have our own choices. If he/she is supposedly real why does all the disasters happen why not stop them instead of say seeing the odd person in the dreams or whatever what has God got favourite's or something?

Does God have favourites or something? I believe we make our own paths and choices i wouldn't like to think i was influenced in some way by God as that would be controlling wouldn't it? Mind you if God was real i'd have a few questions to ask him/her at those heavenly gates if i ever got there ;)............

To be honest, the first thing I remember actually making me step back and say "whooooooooa, that's some powerful stuff!" was when I was in college and involved in a Bible Study group. One of our members had a good friend back home that had been involved in a car accident and was in a coma for a couple of months. She came to us w/ a prayer request for him to wake up. Not even 24 hours later he was awake and talking. Coincidence??? Maybe. But it made me think.

We have a friend who suffered a major heart attack at home, was pronounced dead, but revived on the way to the hospital. It was touch and go for weeks. His church group prayed for him and he revived. Our very religious friends are sure it was because a group of people prayed for him that God listened and altered the course of history to save him. My take is that this could be God answering prayers, the undefined power of a group of people to wish for something, or pure coincidence. I can't make that call because regardless of the choice it would be an assumption. Of note, while our friend is still alive, he still has serious health issues. Is he still here to resolve some issue in his life or learn another lesson? Impossible to say, but I admit that while I can't say I believe, I lean towards the notion of our lives having some purpose. Why? Just because I want to. :)

I can say that my life became unmanageable and I was working with religious co-workers.
I came to a point where I felt broken. I gave in (in my head) to idea and I started seeing results immediately and it just progressed from there.
(I'm not talking about money, I am talking about sanity.)

Are you saying you gave into the notion of a loving God who will take care of you? If so, this could be something spiritual at work or just self soothing. When something like this happens, a so called "leap of faith" happens. In general terms, something in your brain changed. Did this come from within or was it an external influence? The problem I see is identifying the mechanism. The Devil is in the details. ;)

In the end does it matter if you identified it correctly or not? If it's your faith and you are not actively shoving your views down other people's throats, then no problem. The real problem are the people who take these feelings and try to dictate to society in general, God's plan, rules, likes, dislikes, love, anger, punishments, and morality, as if they know all of these details. What's worse is when religious leaders make themselves wealthy doing it. The televangelists I've seen are such crass sales people.

Just wondering where the profit is in your constant promotion of an 'Earth Simulator'?

Then why do you have a problem with Christians that aren't 'shoving religion' down your throat?

Speak with forked tongue much?
