Democracies claim to be based on the principles of free speech, liberty, reason, and justice. However, many democratic countries engage in surveillance, suppression, and inequality. Have democracies strayed from their philosophical roots? Can modern governance truly balance freedom and security? Is democracy still the best system, or does it need some kind of reform?

Modern democracies strive to uphold their ideals, but often fall short due to political polarization, corporate influence, and systemic inequalities. While they promote freedom, equality, and representation, real-world governance sometimes prioritizes power and economic interests over these principles. I think democracy works best when citizens actively hold leaders accountable, ensuring ideals aren’t just rhetoric but reality.

Modern democracies in many parts of the world are a far cry from the core principles of democratic governance. There is no freedom of speech. Institutions like the judiciary are controlled heavily and coerced to do the bidding of the executive in many countries. Humans can't be true democrats.

No they do not, using my country as a case study or an example, the democracy we have is mostly just on paper, in realities it is nothing close to true democracy.

good question, I suppose it always depends on the government that is in power, in general terms no, they don't really defend it since they usually end up doing other types of things but anyway

Modern democracies often claim equality, freedom, and justice, yet practice can fall short due to corruption and racism. I’ve seen free speech protected, but also manipulated by misinformation, showing ideals and reality don’t always align.
