Realism in games is reaching cinematic levels. Does extreme visual fidelity desensitize players to violence, or help them understand its real-world consequences more clearly?

Exposure to too much violence is certainly making people less sensitive to violence. I have read a lot of studies about this.

I think it depends on context and intention. Hyper-realistic violence can either numb players or make them more aware, depending on storytelling. When games use realism thoughtfully, it can evoke empathy and reflection rather than just shock or spectacle.
