This just happened twice about 5 minutes apart...

The screen went black for a second or so..... then a message appeared saying something about the display driver quit working but has recovered.

Why would it quit working?
What did it recover from?

Do you know what gfx card you are using?

Also, check for loose connections to and from the monitor, just in case that maybe causing it

Fifi... download Speccy. It free so I know you'll like that you cheapo.

Download it from one of these sites. They're both safe so you won't have to worry about a virus.
- Download from FileHippo.com
- Download from Piriform.com

After the download is done install the program and run it. It will tell you everything you need to know about your system. When you find out the type of video card and the driver version you have post the info here and we'll try and help you find and install the newest drivers for it.

Since you have Vista on your computer, I'll assume that your computer and your monitor are not terribly old. My first thought was you may need to replace your monitor, but it may still be usable. This advice is not coming from an expert, you know. :24:

Okay. I've downloaded Speccy. Took a bit what with dial up and all. I ran the program. Perhaps the video card and driver version are listed under some other heading. Help.......

You don't have a separate video card. Yours is on-board and built into your motherboard.

You could try Intel's site. I'm assuming they know what they are doing when it comes to their stuff.

http://www.intel.com/support/detect.htm

I didn't run the program because I don't have Intel inside :D but it should be pretty straight forward.
