Were they there to protect us from those missiles that Iraq didn't have and which couldn't bomb London within 10 minutes? Personally I couldn't give a shit, it seems suicide bombers are the way our enemies are going now so these defenses seem pretty pointless. Believe it or not, we have our own defenses over here too.

Good thing y'all don't have much oil or we'd find a reason to invade.... Well, maybe not now as Obama's family isn't BigOil? But then again, he has sold out to the corporate masters too.... Invade!! ;):willy_nilly:

No they were for Iran, who is admittedly working on nukes and long range ballistic missiles. Given optimum ballistic flight paths, a system installation in Poland could have covered not only the US but the entirety of Europe.

Nova, this is precisely the reason we need to close our outlying bases. We can't afford to be the world's police, and we really don't have the moral standing. It's time to bring our troops home. The only reason we kept the bases open was because of the employment catastrophe that would result by cutting so many people loose, but it's still the right thing to do.

I've kinda thought the same thing for a while.

I think it be fun to see how the European welfare state endures when their defense expenditures have to go up by 5X once the're not under our umbrella. Hell, we provide something like 90% of the strategic airlift capability to NATO so it would be fun just watching them try to get their troops where they need to go and especially try to supply 'em...

It certainly was a good idea to scrap the missile defense installation to get Russia on our side...

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/14/world/europe/14diplo.html?_r=2

Denting President Obama’s hopes for a powerful ally in his campaign to press Iran on its nuclear program, Russia’s foreign minister said Tuesday that threatening Tehran now with harsh new sanctions would be “counterproductive.”

It also came after the Obama administration announced that it would retool a European missile defense system fiercely opposed by Russia. That move was thought to have paid dividends for the White House when Mr. Medvedev appeared to throw his support behind Mr. Obama on Iran, though American officials say the Russian president was also likely to have been reacting to the disclosure of the secret nuclear site near Qum.
