The White House - Blog Post - Facts Are Stubborn Things

There is a lot of disinformation about health insurance reform out there, spanning from control of personal finances to end of life care. These rumors often travel just below the surface via chain emails or through casual conversation. Since we can’t keep track of all of them here at the White House, we’re asking for your help. If you get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to flag@whitehouse.gov.
Does this pass the smell test for you?

Not really.

Because they're ASKING you. Not forcing you to do it.

Having the administration asking for information regarding conservative misinformation about health care doesn't really seem like a bad thing to me.

Would you post the same response if the Bush administration had asked people to forward to them any emails opposing the Iraq war?

So you're comparing health care legislation that could potentially save thousands of lives; to a war started on complete fabrication and under false pretenses, that has caused the deaths of thousands of US servicemen and countless Iraqi's?

I'm comparing a US federal administration branch asking for personal information on people opposed to its policies, with another US federal administration branch asking for personal information on people opposed to its policies.

Why did you not answer my question?

Regarding two separate types of issues. Apples and Oranges?

Why did you not answer my question?

I just wanted to clarify the point more. And yes, I would probably post very critical response if this was to do with the Bush administration and the Iraq war.

I don't see anything sinister in what the White House is trying to do here, it does seem slightly 'weird'. But on the other-hand, using the people as a way help respond and contribute to the fighting of misinformation about an issue isn't an entirely new concept. (Believe me, there is a lot of lies and grossly distorted information out there about this new legislation, that really muddies the debate. But that's probably what some want to achieve)

While I do understand the point you are trying to make, I think the two issues are dissimilar in nature, and not validly comparable.

they arent asking for personal information on people who oppose there health care plan, they are asking what rumors have been heard so they can clear it up. get the correct info out there, and shoot down misinformed rumors. i dont see what the big "sham" is about that!

Perhaps if solid, true facts were readily available for everyone to read & reference rumors wouldn't have legs?

:24:Considering our politicians wouldn't know a real fact if it smacked them in the face, no wonder rumors run rampant.

They are exactly, precisely the same. Nixon kept a list of people opposed to him, too. Did you know that?

You are worried about the White house getting personal information on people who are sending emails around who oppose health care reform????

Paranoid much?

What are they going to do if you stand up and publicly oppose it, send the IRS to audit you? Have you picked up in the middle of the night and flown to some third world country for rendition?

you liberals are so predictable

you know damn well if Bush had done something like this you would be screaming about privacy issues.

what possible reason do they want to see individual emails? The misinformation is out there and readily available. You can get it here or other forums or on youtube.

This just proves how arrogant and stupid Obama and his crew are. Times are getting desperate for them and with the latest Rasmussen poll showing the democrats in the same disfavor today as the republicans were last November it is understanding.

Hard to believe they could self destruct so rapidly.

They didn't ask for the rumors; they asked for the email. You're aware of how much information is in a forwarded email, aren't you?

The email address & ip of the forwarder
The email address of the originator
The email list of all the people the originator sent the email to
Oh yeh, and the information itself, which can be gotten from any 9-year-old and Google.

Dropping that information into a database, how quickly do you think an IT geek can pull up trends, find names & addresses, pass information to, say, the propaganda guy/gal, or the IRS?

*waits for scoffing to subside*
It's the intimidation factor.

Wow, you guys don't know me very well at all, do you? Just do a search on my posts and see what I had to say about the Bush Administration and the NSA data mining programs that are probably still going on today. You know the secret rooms filled with computers that tap directly into every major communication in the US. If the Obama administration wanted your emails that slammed health care reform, he would only need to call the NSA and have them print out a report.
If you think your emails are safe from prying eyes, you are pretty gullible.

And no, I don't see this as some elaborate scheme to find out who is sending this crap around in emails. I think you are reading into it too much... there are much better ways to get information on you and your views. If you don't think that the government has web crawlers checking out every post you ever made, then you are living in a dream world.

This was pointed out earlier in the thread by someone else, but let me try to make the distinction a little clearer for you.

These two are completely different.
1. Asking for emails with misinformation so the record could be set straight and people can make an honest evaluation of the pending health care reform
2. Asking for emails with people who appose the ongoing war in Iraq

Now these questions are similar.
1. Asking for emails with misinformation so the record can be set straight and people can make an honest evaluation of the pending health care reform
2. Asking for emails with misinformation so the record can be set straight and people can make an honest evaluation of the pending war in Iraq

Do you see the difference?

And what makes you think I didn't send an angry email to the white house about Iraq???

You proved our point. You admit you did not approve of what Bush did. Yet condone what Obama is doing. It is not about the govt data mining. This is about people turning other people in. It is a lot easier to do devious shit when the info is given to you versus the other avenues. Lets face it Obama and the dems want to cram this up our ass and are not interested in debate. So they resort to this along with claiming there are organized mobs at meetings. But then when things are turning to shit on you in a hurry the panic mode sets in and irrational things are done.
