I'll admit that I've heard about it, but besides that it was at a Sikh temple and there were 6 shot dead, the gunman was ex-military, an officer was shot, and the gunman was shot and killed by officers I don't know much more. I need to go read the story.

I agree, though...interesting the difference in reaction between this and the shootings in Aurora, CO.

The only other things I have heard was less than honorably discharged from the service. His weapon was a 9MM pistol. He was dispatched by the police.

So, why the indifference? Perhaps if it had been an extremist shooting Christians, then would it have been newsworthy?

Same reason Natalee Holloway is STILL making headlines while I'd probably be lucky to find 2 of you who even know who LaToyia Figueroa is. The media has been picking and choosing the stories they think we'll sympathize with or take notice of since the beginning of time, unfortunately.

I believe only a semi auto handgun was used. It doesn't seem as noteworthy compared to when an "assault rifle" is used. Not as a high profile case as the Congress woman in Arizona.

I also didn't read much news on the story about the teenager in China who killed 8 people on a "knife rampage".

By some accounts on the shooting in Wisconsin, could be an act of "domestic terrorism", which looking at the shooters past, I might tend to agree with. Interesting that they didn't have the term "domestic terrorism" in the news back in the 50's and 60's.

I don't really see it as being a media conspiracy, more a lack of public outrage. So far nobody who has posted has confirmed that THIS IS A BAD THING.

Compare to the 'Batman' killings. Within hours of the shooting, there was a lengthy thread.

I just can't believe the crazy shit some people do - where do you get off thinking it's OK to take another person's life?

Bloody hell that is beyond awful.

I feel for the families effected by his lunacy.

So pointless and horrific, I cannot believe this :(

Tragic, and utterly inexplicable.

Thats frkn horrible...

.....and so on. In the first 24 hours, there was a huge response on this board. 80 posts.

These families were torn apart on Sunday in their place of worship. And forgive me, but it appears that nobody gives a damn.

Made some news in Canada, mainly because of the assumption the shooter could not distinguish Sikhs from muslims, oh and btw he had ties to white supremacy groups, the number of dead is insignificant, when the media have real facts like these :(

Actually, I've been talking about this on another forum and expressed what I felt on there. Along with other topics that aren't being discussed on here.

There wasn't a thread on here, I didn't feel like making one. I don't make threads on every thing that I hear in the news or that gets to me. I don't post every single feeling on Offtopicz. Just because I didn't post what I felt on this forum for you to read, doesn't mean I don't give a damn.

If you need my reaction on it then fine: It's a terrible tragedy. I feel deeply sorry for the families left behind. I feel sad that in this day and age, race and religion cannot be accepted and there are individuals who murder others because of it.

When I first read that is was Sikhs, honestly figured it might of been an internal dispute within that religious community (at the time, they didn't release any information on the shooter).

I agree there has been some violent internal conflict within the Sikh community, i expected this to be an extension of that struggle

This crime is certainly a bad thing and I feel for the families involved. It has not gotten near the media coverage that the Colorado killing spree got. I believe the sheer number of people shot and the fact it occurred at a movie premiere drew more national attention. The fact they have the Colorado shooter and are finding out how long he planned his killings has caused morbid curiocity. The Sikh killing seems more like a demented individual bent on dying after killing others and he was killed. We have a local place called The Southern Poverty Law Center who said the Sikh shooter was on their watch list because of his association with "HATE" groups.

Although any shooting like this is equally important to me
I believe it is because of the short time period since the batman thing
everyone was so hyped about it and now are just so disgusted at the idea there is nothing to be said anymore at the moment until all has died down for a lengthy period and things are forgotten

I have a few guesses why this is washing over the public.

1. I bet a lot of people in the US don't know Sikhs aren't Muslims. That's probably embarrassing and awkward, as it aligns a person with the shooter.

2. Probably a good deal of racism, misguided terrorist repulse, or bigotry of another kind...

3. In general, I think humans relate to people like themselves much easier than groups they know little about. Most of us could relate to being in a movie theater with your friends and family. Fewer of us can relate to worshiping in a Sikh temple.

That's society.

Too soon since the last big shooting
Less spectacular than the last shooting
First shooting was during a national media event
availability of pictures/people willing to talk to media
victims probably not as hyped for revenge as the last ones were - calmer

I only heard about it yesterday, until then I hadn't seen it on googles news feed. Which is where I get 99% of my news from.

I can only apologize Dundee if I offended you by not posting about it sooner. :p

i suppose the less spectacular comment would not apply if the shooting took place in a Christian house of worship, whomever carried it out
