Denouement

It's one thing to name them, and one thing to try
To hold them together, to keep them close by.
If you lock them inside and wait for them to die,
they'll bury you alive.

So you conjure up ghost men to keep me amused.
I close my eyes tightly to feel less confused.
When you finish I say, "please, may I be excused?"
And I throw up your expensive booze.

So lean in, let me tell you one thing you'll hear:
Our bodies are made out of water and fear.
I curl in a ball, hope the hunger disappears.
It all just feels sincere.

And at the window, I sob.
As you look at my swollen face,
Your thoughts turn to an absent God,
And I say, "sorry, I've lost my place."

Well, it's hard to step inwards, when you're stepping out.
I stumbled, I forgot what it's all about.
You're harried, I'm humbled, we're both feeling doubts,
so let's just go ahead without.

I've broken her record, two weeks without food,
So I finally feel okay, I'm in a good mood.
The fact is it's all just a way to get screwed,
And to see my bones protrude.

At the cafe, I sigh,
As you look at my bare dinner plate.
I mumble my delayed goodbye,
And say, "sorry, it just can't wait."

There are people downtown with their pale faces drawn.
They walk backwards through secrets right up until dawn.
These ghost men they come without being called on.
This has been my denouement.
