"average of 35 miles per gallon for cars and light trucks, including SUVs, by 2020, the first increase by Congress in car fuel efficiency in 32 years. With oil prices hovering near $90 a barrel and gasoline above $3 a gallon, Democrats have been eager to sent Bush a package of new energy measures."

It's kind of strange reading that as a UK citizen. An average new family car here probably does that to the gallon, I've even owned an old rust bucket that does 50 miles to the gallon and what you're paying for fuel per gallon, we pay over that amount per litre!:eek

LOL. Peter, the Europeans are much further ahead of us in regards to feul efficiency and public transportation. The European industries have been advancing in the stweardship of the environment and fuel efficiency of vehicles for some time.

Mercedes has been experimenting with radical new technologies to practically fully combust diesel, meaning there is little if any dangerous by-product from combustion. And they are engines that can get upwards of 50-60mpg to boot.

We Americans are painfully slow at progress. Threaten our 80,000kilo family vehicles and we will drop bombs on your country...lol

Pitiful really

The best example I can think of is the Smart car. Ok, it's only a 2 seater but it has loads of storage space. Despite looking stupid it does 120mph, 70 odd miles to the gallon and is only 600cc, which lowers the insurance considerably. You can save the money what you pay for it in a year compared to an average family saloon!:eek

Then once it gets rolling, I'll smash into peices the myth behind Ethanol.

Good gosh... Somebody has to do it. Batter's up BadBoy. Good luck talking sense into people on this one. I still spit up blood some mornings from this debate. :willy_nilly:

A fact I wish more of my brethren would understand before they started to complain. *shakes head* We're getting there. Slowly, but we're doing it.

It's partially a matter of population density and cost. The cities are older, the roads are small as hell, you have people stacked on top of people, no parking, and taxes that make fuel more valuable than silver. Market forces are driving innovation in Europe.

We Americans are painfully slow at progress.
Not really a fair assessment. We've set the bar in so many things it's not worth trying to make a list.

Being the first, and having such a large infrastructure don't help when it comes to always being the most advanced. Look at our use of 120V for instance.

It's possible, the big three do not want to spend the money, and it's not like big oil is going to suffer, they are never going to lose

It isn't that they don't want to spend the money. They are spending the money. Look at gains they've made over the last 10 years or so. Most American cars are already doing better than the new requirements are looking for. The problem is, the I.C.E. is 150 year old technology. It's amazing they're able to do with it what they are.

If Chrysler could put a car to market that got 70mpg with 250hp, they would make a killing doing it. It's the wet dream in the Big Three. Most people who drive imports claim to drive them for efficiency reasons. (Even though for years they were all around better vehicles.) ... [not anymore though. :D ]

I'll start caring about fuel efficiency when Dodge makes a hybrid Ram that doesn't look like shit and can keep up with a real Ram.
