At present I am undertaking a part-time course in creative writing...Why? Because writing is one of my passions ( as the amount of poetry I have posted here can attest to). Anyway, one of the set tasks for the course was to choose from a list a single word and writing a 200 word or less piece with the chosen word setting the feel and tone. My chosen word was "dark" and the work I'm submitting is as follows...

Sometimes life brings with it harsh boundaries like literal stone walls where days melt into twilight. Within the dark void that my walls created I knew only the inky blackness of a starless night. The days contained nether a dawn nor dusk, but were filled with the monotonous slow passage of time, and as I waited my conscience was my sole companion. With forehead against clasped hands I would pray for the trembling to cease, for courage, and most of all, for the courage to stand firm. With so many repetitions the prayers should have come easily, but each prayer was different from the one that came before. With each passing moment the doubts would surface, taking on different shapes, and the comforting visions of loved ones drifted away leaving me to journey along my own path. With my last prayer left unfinished, lingering on my lips like the taste of an aged red wine, a sliver of light spills into the blackened abyss bring ing with it the raptuous joy of a birds song awakenening me to the promise of a new day like a Spring bud bursting forth through the Winter thaw.

Any constructive criticisms? Thoughts? Opinions? Anything need a little tweaking before I submit?
