Many so-called Everyday Americans who live in the oft-maligned red states essentially are people who live in more-open spaces and, therefore, see little need or benefit for government management of their lives. The frontier may be nearly gone, but the person who prefers wider horizons will have little use for bureaucrats bearing the latest government how-to (or how-not-to) document.

Those who have opted to live in densely populated blue areas need third-party authorities to maintain order and figure they'll trade a little freedom for the convenience and cultural riches of city life.

Indeed she could have. Having always lived in cities and now in a rural small town, there is a definite difference in the people and attitude of the people. Self-reliance. Plus I was surprised how much friendlier people were. Tho, not so much any longer. People are pissed. Which brings me to this quote from the article:

"These are tiny things, not terribly important, sort of like raindrops. Individually, they're not much. In combination, they become something less pleasant."

There is a strong point there. If you look at things over just the last 10 years... One by one, they don't seem so bad. But string them all together and you have something much worse. I've often wondered if they ran a montage of every little thing we've lost, if people would wake up and see the whole picture that is in front of us staring us in the blind-face?

But to the topic, I'd agree there is a definite difference from "City-Dwellers" to "County-Dwellers". But that's not to say I don't know some very conservative, God-Fearing people who are Dems. Cuz I do. So, it's not a blanket assumption on politics. Nor self-reliance.

But it's damn good to know that I can shoot my gun in my yard and nobody is gonna say jack cuz they do it too! :D:rockon: I love being a redneck. Except I hate when my other neighborlady burns her trash and it's got plastic in it. :mad Ya take the good with the bad when you embrace freedom. :cool

I have heard this a lot. Could you provide some specifics?

For instance the Patriot Act is condemned. I did not approve of it either but it has not impacted me.

If you don't know, you're not paying attention to what's really happening :p:D Honestly? I'm too lazy to dig up link after link after link. I did my ShillSlaying for almost a decade and it did no good. I will give one example tho - it gives a broad scope. Airports since September 11th. I know, I know, we're 'safer' now in this land of the Free & home of the Brave. But that we stand for it at all says much. That's just the airlines. Not even getting into government.

I think the whole post was on topic.

Thanks for the link. Insightful article and makes sense as a theme for conservative thinking- keep government out of my backyard, unless it's religion. ;)

I came across this quote today and thought of this topic:

"Today Americans would be outraged if U.N. troops entered Los Angeles to restore order; tomorrow they will be grateful. This is especially true if they were told there was an outside threat from beyond, whether real or promulgated, that threatened our very existence. It is then that all peoples of the world will plead with world leaders to deliver them from this evil. The one thing every man fears is the unknown. When presented with this scenario, individual rights will be willingly relinquished for the guarantee of their well being granted to them by their world government."
