The strange tale of a nail coughed up after being embedded inside a California man for decades has reached the final frontier -- eBay.
After spending 35 years inside the body of Guy "Bud" Hart, the tiny, one-inch sliver of calcified metal is now up for sale to the highest bidder on the online auction site.
Hart's stranger-than-fiction story has received national media attention since the 84-year-old coughed up the nail during a coughing fit last month. The nail punched its way into Hart's body in 1970, after a lawmower accidently shot the spike into Hart's throat.
After years of thinking the projectile had forever lodged itself against a rib, a x-ray showed the nail was actually in Hart's lung. A few days later while brushing his teeth, a tingle in Hart's throat prompted a coughing jag that finally ejected the nail once and for all.
Now that connoisseurs of the strange and bizarre have inquired about added the nail to their collections, Hart opened up bidding on the item Tuesday with the help of his grandson.
By late Thursday, nearly two days after the auction started, bidders had only boosted their offers to $6.47, still below Hart's reserve price.
