Yes, and no. I wouldn't be a member but my husband likes it. As far as I'm concerned I'd never go there, but you see I hate shopping so I'm not a good person to ask ;)

When I went in with my wife to get a membership, my wife informed me I need to work on my people skills.

If a company wants my business and they tell me I HAVE to use American Express with them if I want to use a credit card to buy from them, I will tell them where to stick that credit card and what they can do with their application to be a member of their "club".

American Express sucks IMO.

really? I've had an Amex since I was 16, and it's by far been my favorite card.

See that depends..

I have the regular Amex card that I love but requires you to pay off the balance monthly..

But the Credit Card Amex was a real pain in the ass that would badger me all the time during some rough times.. Now that I am doing well, they wish they had me back but I tell them to Flock off, the Regular Card does just fine.. They refuse to close the Account and say I overpaid by .10 cents and have kept the account open for 5 years now.. They are "Richards" of Credit Cards..

When you talk to Amex they tell you they are completely separate companies.. :p

What is the annual fee for the card you have?
Does the card have a "membership fee"?
What is the percentage rate if by chance you don't pay the balance in full?

In general, I believe American Express relies on it's own brand marketing to command higher fees which is total hogwash IMO if you pay your bills.

I have had two credit cards for the last 15 or 20 years. Both always paid in full when the balance is due. Both are under a 10% rate, no fees. With the one (a federal credit union) I can get a used car loan up to 40k at a 1.5% rate (that most lending institutions can't touch) and on the other card, I get 1.5% back on EVERY purchase I make with it and I can roll over those accumulative "rewards points" to be used ANYTIME I'd like.

American Express did send ma flyer recently. Looked really cool with a couple dressed in black leather standing in front of a black helicopter. Man, those people looked like they had money and American express really wanted me to feel like I fit into a GREAT looking club. Heck, looked cool enough that I decided to read the "fine print" on what it would cost me to join this "club". I called them directly and told them that they were smoking dope if they though I was going to PAY them what they wanted to charge me to join their club.

I've been around the block long enough to realize nothing in life is for free. The reason credit card companies can offer things when you use their card is because they charge the merchant (where you used the credit card) a fee. In my industry, some companies will allow other companies to use a credit card to pay off monthly balances. These balances can run into the hundred thousand dollar range no problem. If a credit card is allowed to pay a balance off, American Express is the LAST card accepted due to their higher than normal charge fee (and if the vendor accepts American Express, there are ways to try to recoup the fee, but usually at the card owners expense LOL). Ever notice how American Express is usually the one card that is NOT accepted at a business?

So yes, in general, American Express sucks moose cock big time. Besides that, their commercials showing famous/important people never impressed me. Probably the only bigger crooks on the block is American Bank.

Here it's Discover that's never accepted and charges the highest fee for businesses. Amex has the same fee as Mastercard, with Visa at the lowest (they can probably afford to be, do to being the most popular).

My annual fee isn't hardly anything. I don't really ever use credit cards, and my credit for a long time was much less than steller. The only thing that saved me was that I did have an Amex, and it always rocketed my score much more so than my Visa and MC. It's just weighted more heavly, and I needed that. That's why it's always been my fav. It's kept me in good standing, and now that I've climbed my way out of my credit hole. They kept me and never hounded me when I wasn't perfect.

I worked for a bankruptcy lawyer for 2 years. I will NEVER have a credit union anything, or a BoA account. The shit they pull with their contracts is unbelievable.

So, you pay a fee to use their card. Part of my point as to why I think they suck.
