22 cat 6 wire runs including cat6 jacks and a 32 port cat6 patch panel hung on the wall.

9 cat5 wire runs including a 66 block with each wire punched down and installed ready for use.

This was supposed to be "just a few wire runs in a vacant office". Well yeah, it ended up taking 22+ hours.

But it's done! Go me!

I refuse to go back there. They wanted me to wander around toning all of the jacks to number them - fuck that, they didn't buy a phone system from us, and they wanted cat6 which is 4 times the cost of cat5... probably because the owner of the building was paying for the wiring.

90% of this was attic work. aka PITA... worst attic setup, ever.

The hole to get up into the attic was behind the firewall, so you had to wander 20 feet to your right to go through the door, just so you can walk back across to where you needed to be to grab the cable.

I'm glad I got the attic work done before 2 today, it got up to 70 outside... which means ... oh... about 100 in the attic itself.

Not at you. Just at the guys that wanted cat6 so they can run gigabit - which cat5 can handle.

Had I ran cat5 and not had to put the network in a whole new room, it would have saved about 10 hours worth of useless work.

a water supply pipe can carry only so much water. whereas a drain pipe can carry much more in the same distance.

cat 5e is somewhere inbetween a water supply pipe and the drain pipe. i want cat7, which is a big drain pipe. cat6 is a small drain pipe, but is bigger than the cat5e water pipe.

make any more sense?

Cat5 and cat6 are identical. Only difference is the little piece of frikken plastic between the wires. Makes it twice as hard to pull, and even more annoying to put down on jacks/patch panels.

I think that I'm right. Cat5 and Cat6 are twisted exactly the same way, aside from the little piece of plastic - the wiring inside is I-freaking-dentical.
