Is that free speech or harassment?
Dale McAlpine was charged with causing “harassment, alarm or distress” after a homosexual police community support officer (PCSO) overheard him reciting a number of “sins” referred to in the Bible, including blasphemy, drunkenness and same sex relationships.
The 42-year-old Baptist, who has preached Christianity in Wokington, Cumbria for years, said he did not mention homosexuality while delivering a sermon from the top of a stepladder, but admitted telling a passing shopper that he believed it went against the word of God.

seriously i think the way he was treated if the article is accurate is a crock of shite

he is entitled to his opinion and should be able to speak freely if he states that it is a sin in th eyes of his god who are we to disagree

unfortunately the media attention this has received gives him more publicity than he deserves

I think the police were spot on. If he wants to preach that in the privacy of his own church or home, that's up to him, but you cannot be approaching strangers in the street to do this. We have laws like this in place so that hate filled nutters cant go around behaving like the Westboro Baptists are allowed to do in the USA. Obviously this is no where near as extreme as them but if you give this one guy leeway to act like this, you cant stop mobs from spreading their messages of hate.

One cool thing about Fred Phelps and his ilk (Westboro) is their hate-speech gave rise to these men and women:

Very valid point.

I'd love for Pat Robertson to just STFU. But every time he opens his mouth he shows what an intolerant bigot he is for all the world to see....

I'm rather them being underground than allowed to offend and abuse people on the streets.
there is a fine line here, in my mind he can say stuff like God considers homosexualtiy as a sin, as this is something that can be debated until the cows come home, it is based on opinion not fact and to my mind a rationale debate could defeat his argument, and this I think should be allowed, however if he stood up and said all Hoomsexuals are molestors of children then that is different, because that is obviously a hate fuelled lie

i guess the issue here is that we dont really know what he said to that woman

i find it interesting that the cops waited until after his conversation then went to talk to her, they definitley seem to want to shut this guy up, i bet there is some history here that we dont know about

Poterjack's comments would be of more significance if I could stop staring at his cleavage.

Brings to mind the concept of too much of a good thing, is no longer all that good? ;)

Christian campaigners have expressed alarm that the Public Order Act, introduced in 1986 to tackle violent rioters and football hooligans, is being used to curb religious free speech.
There is a real problem. It shows you that any such law, laws designed to maintain public order can be twisted to suit other agendas. Just like Singapore's tendency to call public dissent, terrorism.

It is a dilemia. On the one hand I believe in free speech, BUT when someone starts to disrupt something like a funeral to spout BS......well I start seeing red and I don't think Democratic thoughts.....

I would not say anyone has a right to disrupt a funeral, unless maybe it's a funeral for a monster and he/she is being treated like a hero. Has that ever happened? Hmmm. :smiley24:

I'm with Peter on this one: hate speech should be quashed whenever it happens, those kind of attitudes do not belong in a civilised society.

I think the guy should've got a kicking rather than being arrested tho.

more fuel to his fire though, this is exactly how the westboro baptists church works they provoke people into violence, then sue them, they can generate big bucks in court settlements

a cunning tactic.

Perhaps a different tack: the dude should've been sent on a party weekend in Brighton, taken around all the gay clubs and then be made to walk the streets wearing a pink sandwich board with the words "bigoted ignorant tosser" on them.
