As a rule do you think that regular fare, adult drama T.V. can compete with less censored venues such as Showtime and HBO? Keep in mind I'm framing this from the perspective of someone who lives in the compared-to-the-world, a significantly censored public broadcasting environment, the U.S., but not as censored as it used to be. England and Japan are two examples of less censorship.
Most of my favorite shows over the last 10 or so years have been on subscription channels such as HBO. Two notable exceptions are Lost and Heros (when it first started). A good show has to have a good story. I'm saying that if the story subject matter includes graphic violence and sex, showing it in a non-gratuitous manner adds more grit, more realism, and more "thrust".
My top shows of recent years would be Sopranos, Deadwood, Rome, and Lost. I was pissed when HBO cancelled Deadwood after 3 seasons and even more pissed when they cancelled Rome after 2.
