Carlton Cole removes 'racist remarks' after Twitter backlash
West Ham forward Carlton Cole was forced to remove 'racist' comments about Ghanaians, Poles and Albanians on Twitter during last night's England friendly after a backlash from users.

West Ham star Carlton Cole made allegedly 'racist' comments (Twitter)
Cole used his social networking page to post 'jokes' about the number of visiting fans at the match, suggesting the presence of 20,000 Ghanaian nationals would see the immigration services 'surround Wembley'.

The footballer's comments were immediately pounced upon by fellow Twitter users, who suggested Cole's remarks could be deemed offensive.

However, Cole followed his earlier tongue-in-cheek comment with several more - including comments on Polish and Albanian nationals in the UK.

'Next friendly is gonna be Poland then Albania, government think their sly! [sic]' he continued.

And after receiving more feedback on his tweets, he added: 'Why are there so many sensitive people out there! it was a joke & its not even racist!'

Cole was inundated with criticism for his remarks, with some users taking a particularly vitriolic tone in their responses.

One user, referring to the monkey chants heard from a section of Millwall fans at a League Cup tie against the Hammers at Upton Park two years ago, said: 'Three words: "you are racist"...u deserved what Mallwall fans did to you in 2009...u didnt deserve any sympathy at all.' (sic)

Another taunted him over his failure to make the England squad for the Ghana game, which finished 1-1, adding: 'the only way for you to get involved with the England squad is to pay the £55 match ticket & grab a seat like the rest of us!'

Despite the possibility of FA action against him, Cole received support from a number of fans on Twitter, with many slamming suggestions the 27-year-old's rant even constituted racism.

'have you seen @Carlton9Cole 's tweets tonight? Some people calling him #racist. i think its just good #banter,' said one.

Another added: 'Put you hands together for @Carlton9Cole for some of the funniest quotes this evening!'

However, one user summed up the exchanges on the social networking site, concluding: 'it's not racist to make such a dumb remark, but it's very rude to the many genuine Ghanian people that live in the UK.' (sic)

The Football Association is yet to comment on whether an investigation is to be launched, or if any action will be taken against Cole, but it previously fined then-Liverpool player Ryan Babel £10,000 over a Twitter picture showing referee Howard Webb in a Manchester United shirt.

He seems pretty genuine Carlton Cole. Not like a footballer at all, making jokes that normal people make.

Haha! Carlton tweeted that he's been dropped from the squad for tomorrow because of this. Several of the tabloid ran with the story and it was an April fools day joke. Well played, Carlton! :24:

Carlton Cole charged for Ghana fans comments on Twitter

_52078370_011390072-1.jpg Cole has until 13 April to respond to the FA's charges Carlton Cole has been charged with improper conduct by the Football Association for his comments on Twitter during England's friendly with Ghana.
The West Ham striker referred to the large numbers of Ghana fans at Wembley Stadium in comments he later deleted.
Cole, 27, tweeted: "Immigration has surrounded the Wembley premises! I knew it was a trap! Hahahaha.
"The only way to get out safely is to wear an England jersey and paint your face w/ the St. George's flag!"
The England international, who won his last cap in March 2010, claimed his comments on the social networking site were a joke and has until 1600 BST on 13 April to respond to the charge.
Lord Ouseley, head of Kick It Out, football's equality and inclusion campaign, said: "We continually urge the responsible use of mediums such as Twitter, particularly due to their increasing accessibility and popularity.
"What can seem like harmless comments can be deemed offensive by others and lead to unwittingly reinforcing negative stereotyping, including racist ones.

"We will work with all our partners to ensure that education on what is and isn't unacceptable behaviour is ongoing."
Cole's reprimand is the latest in a number of incidents regarding Twitter that the FA has felt the need to investigate.
In January, Dutch winger Ryan Babel was fined £10,000 and warned about his future conduct by the FA over a post he made on Twitter.
Babel, who was a Liverpool player at the time, linked to a mocked-up picture of referee Howard Webb in a Manchester United shirt in reference to the official awarding a penalty to the home side and sending off visiting captain Steven Gerrard in Liverpool's 1-0 FA Cup defeat at Old Trafford.
The following month, Arsenal's Jack Wilshere escaped punishment after tweeting about referee Phil Dowd following his side's 4-4 draw with Newcastle.
The FA looked into the matter but stopped short of punishing the midfielder.
During last year's World Cup in South Africa, England's players were banned from posting comments on Twitter or Facebook or writing articles for newspapers for the duration of the tournament.

In fairness, had a white player said this there would have been uproar.

He'll get a fine for it, improper conduct and all that.
