My onboard memory card reader is no longer being recognized by W7. When I plug my cameras memory card into it the LED lights up. From there I go into " Explorer " but none of the drives are listed. If I unplug the card the LED lights up as it's supposed to. I've checked the device manager and can't see any yellow exclamation marks anywhere.

I have a couple new ones in the closet but I'm hoping it's a software issue and something needs to be reinstalled? I really don't feel like ripping my tower apart today. Any ideas?

I also have a portable reader and I plugged that in to a USB port. That works fine so I can still extract my photos but I hate having all these cords hanging around.

Have you looked in Device Manager to see if the hardware is listed and driver installed?

It's not there. The external one shows up though and disappears when I unplug it so that's a good thing.

I have no idea what the bloody thing would be called and because of that I have no idea where to start looking for drivers. Damn I hate this shit.

How many hard drives/partitions do you have inside your computer that is only hard drive(s)?

Same thing happened to my daughter's netbook when I installed 7 on it.
Her solution was an external reader.
I have not gotten around to figuring that out yet cause she aint buggin me about it.

Two h/d's. One primary and one used strictly as a back up.

Partitions... two on the primary. One for the OS and one for all the other stuff.

They were working fine as of last weekend. I hadn't used my camera until yesterday and that's when I found the problem.

I had this happen to me on my last XP system and can't remember how I fixed it. It's driving me nuts.

Is this a Desktop or laptop?
If it is a desktop then your internal card reader is likely pluged into an internal USB header and should be listed in your usb devices in your hardware manager.

Edit: Sorry for the crappy screenshot

Desktop.

If you are talking about the USB Mass Storage Device which I believe you are I checked that. It said it was working properly. Then I checked for a driver update on line and it said it was up to date. What I could do is delete it and let it reinstall but my keyboard and mouse are wireless so that might gimme a bit of a brain pain for a while.

Here's my snap. Sorry for the clarity. ;)

It's a ASUS M3A78-EM (AM2) but I know that isn't the issue. It's a software issue. That I can remember from the last time a bunch of years ago. I just can't remember how I fixed it.

I remember you had problem with the drivers for the mobo sometime ago, I googled the problem, and all they can come up with is to update the mobo drivers, maybe you should try, not saying it will solve the problem, using the latest drivers from the manufacturer of your mobo chipset and card reader :thumbup Unless you have already tried it, I am stumped from over here

You are correct but I solved that problem by removing XP and installing W7 along with a up to date set of drivers. :thumbup

I know it's not a mobo driver problem. I'm pretty sure if I either remove the drivers I pointed out and then reinstall them my problem will most likely go away. Or remove the reader and put in a new one. I'm fairly sure that's what I did a few years ago when I ran into this. I just need to decide to do it because it's never a simple solution and I know it will take me some time. The reader is a bugger to remove.

This is why I prefer the external card readers, though my laptop has an integrated card reader, unfortunately I don't use SD cards. I know wires can be a right mess especially when they get tangled up

Nothing in life is ever easy.

I removed the drivers and reinstalled them. Didn't work.

I disconnected the computer, removed the reader which was a pain in the butt and installed a new one.

Put the box back together which was also a pain in the butt.

Plugged it in, turned it on and watched as the new drivers for the reader were installed.

Checked reader and it worked like a charm.

Discovered my back up H/D wasn't being recognized.

Disconnected the box, took it apart and checked ALL the wiring.

Verified a loose wire to the H/D and made sure that was solid.

Put the box back together, plugged in the wires and turned it on.

DISK BOOT ERROR! :eek Primary H/D not recognized.

Checked BIOS. Sure enough the primary H/D wasn't being recognized.

Took the bloody thing apart again and triple checked all the wiring.

Wiring good so put the bloody thing together again.

Plugged it all in again and switched it on.

Still no boot up. :mad

Went back into the deep abyss of the BIOS and located the missing drive. Set up up to display in the boot sequence and selected it to be it's checked first. ( I should have done this immediately upon discovering it wouldn't boot up. I remembered after the fact that my BIOS changed when I added the back up H/D ages ago. Stupid thing. )

Saved settings, exited and watched it come to life. :clap

There is something that makes me sick to my stomach when my computer doesn't work as it should. I get the exact same feeling of helplessness when my car is in the shop for repairs or service. I think I'm in desperate need of some therapy.

In any event it was a half an afternoon to get a simple job done which I suppose doesn't matter cuz we have a storm happening and there's nothing better to do.

I hate it when the BIOS keeps messing things around, the last mobo I had kept doing that I couldn't leave it on standby/sleep, because as soon as I woke up the computer it crashed, my new setup doesn't do that, so hence evil mobo settings aren't changed.

The thing is I don't do this stuff as often as I used to so you loose your touch and get rusty fast. I don't keep up with technology anymore so that doesn't help either. I know enough to get me out of trouble a lot of times but it's usually the simple things that beat me to a pulp.
